Design problem! What should we change for our bathroom remodel?
For our recent bathroom remodel per the attached picture, we really liked the black framed mirror but we realize it doesn’t work in the end and perhaps we should have made different choices to accomodate the mirror. All the other hardware, light etc. are polished chrome except of course the faucet. To fix the design problem should we:
- Change the mirror frame to polished chrome
- Change the light fixture to black
- Change faucet to polished chrome
- Change the mirror and faucet to polished chrome
- Change everything to black
- Other proposals
1 would be the easiest although I assume 3 or 4 is most probably the right answer. Appreciate your comments & feedback.

Nothing is truly playing nicely together, and that's a crying shame. Wish you had asked when you were selecting, so it would have been possible to correct scale/proportion in the tiles and yes even the vanity and paint with those elements
Change the faucet to chrome.
Now, before I suggest anything else, can you live with the rest. Do YOU really like the result? : ) I think you are not totally thrilled?
Least amount of "fix"?
Change the floor tile to a larger format tile: a pale gray porcelain, at least 6 x 12 in size, or disguise as much as you can with a rug in gray and blue.
Get more of the tub tile. Tile the entire wall around the window, ( that will BEG a change in floor tile ) or at the VERY least, get a paint match to it and paint all four of the walls that deep blue.
Paint the vanity to white.
You chose things you like, but you didn't consider the whole of the mix.
The single biggest issue is the disconnect in tiles and the busy busy of unrelated color and no enough visual separation in scale .

Comments (10)Hey Dwojnar, Thanks for posting your picture. Our guest bathroom is a similar shape and door opening but different configuration. We will be updating this bathroom someday soon and thus I have been looking at possibilities too. I disagree with other posters and I say if you are really bothered by the toilet then move it. My suggestion is to move it to the long wall next to it. By placing it there, it is partially blocked by the shower wall and maybe it is possible to bring that wall a few more inches to further block the long view. If you keep the toilet there, then I would place something very visually interesting on that part of the shower wall just inside the door that is on the sight line to the toilet. By placing a tiled mural or something that catches people's eye, they will focus on that and not the toilet view. Another idea is to run a curtain from the shower wall to the wall by the toilet or from the toilet wall out to a freestanding pole or tower stack and block the view of the toilet that way. My last suggestion is a big large plant could go in there which would add a fresh green touch to the room along with fresh air. Have fun!...See MoreHelp! How can we heat our bathroom?
Comments (13)While I'm sure between the husband and dog we could heat the whole house with farts, they're too smelly and hard to collect. We've found out the joists run in a favorable direction to remove one radiator and run the pipes under the floor, leaving one. We also purchased a heat light as suggested above. I can only find one place who I think stocks the floor warming mats in my area. I can't believe there aren't more, so if anyone knows someplace in the Chicago area, NW or W preferably, please let me know. Comments (6)Lovely! I like the classic white tile and porcelain and how you used furniture pieces in the bathroom. I love that the storage at the end of the tub has pull-outs that can be reached from the toilet. Your custom sink and backsplash and counter are unique and beautiful. Yours may be the first bathroom sink I have seen in which a small or medium dog could be washed! That is a good thing! I showed your pictures to my DH because I am thinking of classic tiled walls with a chair rail for when we redo our bath in a couple of years. He liked it! I was expecting him to say, "too old fashioned." He did not, he said it looked nice. From him, nice is a compliment. He even liked your rows of listello. I was just at the Tile Shop's site the other day looking at the Hampton tiles because someone was selling some on Craigslist. I am hoping to do as you did and get what I can cheaper there, and fill in the rest from the store. I can see that you worked very hard to secure all of your materials - and then cut the floor tiles to size and culled the Hampton tiles, too! Comments (9)Thanks for the tips everyone! Judy, thanks for that article! People keep telling me I'm crazy, we have city water so no way could it have mold in the pipes. Maybe it's time to get it tested, just to be sure. To answer some questions: We aren't touching the exterior of the home unless we have to due to mold issues. We are well-prepared to find mold, dry-rot, and all manner of issues once we rip the shower out. The good news is it's not in the attic, because we can get up there and see that. And it isn't in the wall behind the faucet handle. But I suspect we will have to replace subfloor, insulation, and maybe some joists and framing. The only thing that would surprise me is if it isn't as bad as I think it is. I can't start ripping it out yet though. We won't start the project until I've done a lot of research - demo may be 3-4 months away or more if we find major problems. I do my homework. And I don't want to be without a shower for 9 months or forced to move ahead with the project before I'm ready. But the shower is above the garage, so to your point...I think at least I'll drill some holes in the garage ceiling drywall and get a look underneath before we start this. The bathtub hasn't been used in years because it's one of those jetted-deals that spews black crud every time you turn it on. That's where the new shower is going. I can see under the tub, it's all good, so at least there we are starting fresh there. It's a good point that mold remediation may be necessary...We've done it in the past with my mothers house, so I'm familiar with that process and the lengths they go to to eradicate it. 4 months agolast modified: 4 months agoI will agree a lot going on. The faucet to chrome , a frameless mirror and some nice fluffy towels and not the tiny shelves that will add to the mix . Do a nice chrome hotel towel rack and the walls white color from the floor tile and paint thevnity the same blue as the wall tile in the shower ,A nice glass shower screen .

You have so many angles in that room, I'm thinking a round mirror might soften it up a bit.
I'd prob paint the vanity a deep peacock or some blue shade that works w/the tile.get some plants on the shelves, some other accessories.
Maybe some art above the towel bar that coordinates all those colors.cpartist

4 months agoGot someone to photoshop several options. Three pictures have more brown/orange shelves and one picture has the shelves the same color as the vanity. Also tried making vanity white and it didn’t look good with photoshop. Let me know which one looks better

anything w/darker or cooler wood tones is fine. #2 I like it w/the silver options.Once you get some little plants and items w/color on the shelves, and maybe a piece of art over the towel bar, it will be fine.
some diff ways to style it
if you want something white/nickel, try these w/similar items. (more green plants though)
art is personal, so get what you like, as long as it works w/the colors
have you thought about doing a window film?
even if you just did the white film, its better than the plain window
extra color, do a stained glass effect

you could do marble shelves or something darker
It might be easier to decide what to do once you get the accessories in there.
hang some towels, the shelving w/some greenery and other things, some art, maybe a wicker basket next to vanity w/rolled up towels. even a teak 'bath mat' would be nice.
if you removed every single item in this bathroom except the vanity, it would look pretty blah. like yours.
The colors/textures and other items bring warmth and dimension. try it w/yours
