Please post pics of your honed or leathered Antique Brown
Comments (6)Thanks for the thread, Senator. Interesting pictures, though the "leathered" counters look same as honed in the pictures. Guess as some said, you have to see it in person. Babs, yes, there would probably be minimal eating at the island, we tend to sit at the table for family meals and serve buffet style, so food is plated before sitting down, and the island would only be used occasionally--probably mostly for guests having a beverage and sitting and chatting with me while I work in the kitchen. I've become a "compulsive placemat user" with my polished Antique Brown in the other kitchen's similarly used island, so feel well-trained to minimize accidents with the marble. For whatever occurs, I am prepared to embrace, and I think any etches will be minimally noticeable, given the honed surface, and the lighting situation in the room. Worst-case, I think a freestanding island would be relatively easy to refinish, though I think I would just let it patina naturally. I should have mentioned that the island with marble will be a secondary island, and the main work area of the kitchen will have a small island with the same countertop as the perimeter. In thinking about how my family uses our kitchen, I think the most potential for etching would be with food prep rather than the occasional eating at the secondary island. I see your logic though, for a kitchen where the island is frequently used for dining, there would be just as much risk of etching as on the other countertops....See MoreCan't decide between black granite options...please help!
Comments (12)I like Cambrian black that lascatx mentioned also. It was one that I was gravitating to. Then I saw a black granite called "Blue in the Night" and I think it also goes by "Blue Polare". It is a black granite - very black - but with some cobalt blue inclusions. In mine, the blue inclusions are like confetti rice. I also picked a piece with a quartz vein running through it - I haven't seen quartz veins in other BP/BNight granites since. Here is a picture showing the granite. I must tell you that I needed a flash and to standing up on a chair right over my granite to get this much detail. The little glints here and there are the blue inclusions: A close up shot of the granite so you can see what I mean by the blue confetti: I'm also including some pictures of my kitchen so you can see how black the granite looks nominally: It is in good light, as you walk by it that the cobalt blue flecks flash at you as they catch the light right....See MorePlease vote/advise? Comments (6)We have polished AB and love it. Initially we thought dust was going to be a problem...but once the contractors were done and gone we no longer had much of a dust problem...but, we do wipe down all counters in our kitchen each day. I did a test and didn't wipe down a section of countertop for 3 days. There was some dust, but not much...I was really surprised! Our house is not sparkling clean and it is rather dusty for some reason, so the minimum dust was a surprise. Here's a pic of the counter after 3 days of no wiping down (behind sink): As to fingerprints, etc....first, there aren't anymore than any other countertop; next, yes they do show more than my old laminate did, but they're only showing what was always there! However, unless you have very greasy fingers, they really aren't that obvious...at least not to me, unless the light hits them "just right." Note that my kitchen is a working kitchen, not a showplace, so even if I do see a fingerprint or two, I don't care. I don't regret our countertops and I would put them in again if I had to do it over again. BTW...our granite does not need to be sealed nor do most ABs. Honed counters, from comments I've read here, also have a fingerprint problem so I'm not sure what your options are if you want pristine counters all the time....See MoreBlack Cosmic granite countertop issues - help needed
Comments (4)That is an EXTREMELY problematic "granite". It's best suited to a decorative use where it gets seen, but won't get used, not a kitchen counter. It shales and crumbles like a sonofagun. Granite wholesalers should actually explain this to customers before selling it to them. And it sounds like you got one of the worser slabs instead of one of the harder ones. Really, the only thing that can be done is to select something else and replace it....See Moreecasta
