Comments (33)Hi Dave, good to see you.. Well of course we have different rootstocks, so I can't say what result you'll have, but here my rose is conforming to DA's stated 4 x 3.. although it's 3 x 3 at the moment,. a rounded upright shrub, with a spreading habit, strong stiff canes, like a shrubby floribunda.. no lanky canes.. I don't have Emily Bronte.. I'm not surprised she's a climber in some places.. We've had a shocking Spring for roses, frosts for almost 8 weeks, so we're a good 3 weeks behind schedule in England.. I'm finding the blooms have a richer colour this year, lots of deep pink, lightening with age and warmth as it's nearly 80 today.. ..this first one reminds me of Augusta Luise.. ..love the scent on this rose.....See MoreWhat do you know about these 'literary roses'?
Comments (35)I share the susceptibility to choosing roses by name, but must admit that none of the roses I selected that way stayed in my garden more than a few years. Like others, I have been shrinking my garden for quite some time. So many factors - intermittent drought being one, and yes, years being another. A garden overuse injury put a limit on how much I can do with my right hand. Now that I have recovered from the surgery I can go back to what I used to do, but for only one hour a day. That one hour of intense activity is a total, so on days that I sew or knit I cannot also work in the garden. I've been getting some help these past few months so the garden doesn't look neglected, but I think I'm going to reduce it just a bit more. Better to have a smaller garden that looks good than a larger one that looks like a jungle. At least that is true for me. I caught a glimpse of Miriam Wilkins's garden in El Cerrito after she died. It was a world class collection, but had grown to be just about impenetrable. That's not what I want for my garden. (I'll bet it's not what she wanted either.)...See MoreQuestions re Sizes of Mature David Austin Roses...and Others?
Comments (25)Deborah, thanks for reminding me of Code Girls, which I've wanted to read for quite a while. Prices have probably dropped now. I'm sure this book follows the long line of those books featuring women who did the science, while men got the credit. My uncle was a code breaker in WWll. We still don't know exactly what he did. Strangely, I like English novels of manners and comedies of manners, which "Remains" is, but it's not really clicking with me. Not long ago, I finished he sixth novel in the Mapp and Lucia series (comedies of manners), written in the 1920s-30s by E.F. Benson. They start slow and become hilarious and ridiculous. And though the author wrote lots of other books, probably more serious, these six novels are his best known. I'm an Anglophile, and they are British to the core. The author's father was the Archbishop of Canterbury, no less. I promise to post the cuke sandwich recipe in the autumn thread today. Curried chicken salad makes wonderful little sandwiches, too, and is another mainstay for tea parties. I saw Love's Promise photos a while back and thought it was a gorgeous rose. I need to look it up again. I hope your Hot Cocoa makes a full recovery. We have few gophers out here because of the blessed badgers. There are lots of voles, though, and Finn makes short work of many, Plus, he never eats them, which is a good thing, because they carry parasites. There's nothing like seeing a worm hanging out of a kitty's rear end--gack. Carol, I'm so glad for your warm temps--I swear your weather predictions are the same as ours. We're having smoke again and some wind. Not nice weather to be out in. My sympathies on the spruce tree. I have a story about Colorado Blue Spruce for another time. However, Noooo, on the "stupid avocado tree". My father in law had the most wonderful avocado tree in LA, along with citrus trees. How I miss them, and the perfect avocados he gave me. We all are big avocado fans, and can use many up fast. I wish you could experience the fun of tall candelabra on your roses. I really get a kick out of them, but yes, they are weird looking. Some roses never shoot them up--like Tamora, which is too busy blooming, which I like better. Diane...See MoreWho are your Beauties in Waiting?
Comments (15)I'm planning on having my coming Angel Face be a permanent "beauty in waiting" so that I may dote on her and her diva-esque performances. I just love that clear lavender and rich, sweet citrus scent. Maybe one other rose to be a pot pet, but I haven't decided if I want to make it Perle d'Or (won't be getting big up here and is dwindling in the ground since planting in 2015) which I have or something else that I have coming, or maybe haven't ordered yet. I've dithered on possibly making that Mrs. Sam McGredy from Rogue Valley Roses since she's one of those sparse, temperamental Pernetianas or something particularly tender.
