David Austin 2019 UK new introductions
Comments (48)Marlorena, anyone on this thread could you please share how Eustacia has done for you. I know we are not getting her in 2020 =(, but I can't wait to have her. I will def try Emily and Mill on the Floss, but keep thinking about Eustacia. Also I read on a Uk rose review site that The Mill on the Floss gets black spot, any comments on this? After seeing how amazingly healthy Olivia Austin is, I had great expectation for any new releases....See MoreNew Austin's....
Comments (54)Believe it or not, I'm still waiting for the perfect pink Austin rose. It may not be possible. What I want is a warm silvery pink that fades a bit on the outer petals, but not too much. Quartered, but not too heavily petaled. It should have the cupped (not globular) shape, and retain the form throughout the season. It should be heavily fragrant. It will also need to be able to perform in my climate. The closest so far are Sonia Rykiel (not an Austin, and fades and opens up too much in the heat, and lacks vigor in my garden), and Alnwick Castle (which also opens up too much in the heat, and turns coral). The photos I see of Duchesse de Brabant are close, but not enough petals. Spirit of Freedom has too many petals. Olivia Austin Rose looks great in the pictures, but not so great in real life, being stiff and faded off white here. Evelyn gets close. I’m realizing that what I’m looking for has as much to do with how the flower looks from the side and back as the front. It also has to do with how the bush grows. Picky, picky. Maybe I should start breeding roses....See More2021 David Austin USA Introductions
Comments (60)Thanks Birds. Augusta Luise is not all like a typical hybrid tea. I don't know how large she'll get in SoCal, but she's a big girl here. (I live in zone 7, SW semi arid desert Idaho with hot, dry summers). My roses tend to be large. AL has a lovely, wide growth habit, is very healthy and an excellent bloomer with large fluffy blooms and a nice scent. She is near perfect, I think. Her color varies from light pink to apricots and a little darker, particularly in fall. We don't have fungal rose diseases here--too dry, so roses tend to be very healthy. She's not susceptible to any disease, but none of my roses are. I've grown her since 2013-14. She's grafted on multiflora, was bred by Evers in Germany for Tantau. I purchased her from Hortico, but that was the last year they sold her. She's hard to get. Palatine now sells her, but I think they're sold out. I hope you're able to grow her. Comments (62)Mine was planted last year, so it is not a mature bush. You can see from the picture below that Deelish has a typical hybrid tea V shape and is upright. This picture was taken 6 months after it was planted, in August 2020. The height is about 4&1/2 feet, but you may be able to appreciate from the picture that there were 2 very long canes, both at about 7 feet tall. I think this rose is going to be very tall this year. I won't be surprise that it will get to 6 - 7 feet in overall height. It has already leafing out robustly now in my SF Bay garden. The best feature about Deelish is its fragrance. I have bad sense of smell but I can still appreciate the fragrance is divine. It is probably one of the top 3 most fragrant rose I own. I have heard that the fragrance of Deelish is used in one of well known French perfume?? It is definitely not like Bolero which is compact and round. I have 9 Bolero so I can say they are definitely very different. At least it will get much taller than Bolero. However, the bloom of Deelish is quite English style - more cabbage like....See Moremustbnuts zone 9 sunset 9
