HELP! - pendant placement for kitchen island
Comments (4)I think there would be too many pendants in that space...I think it would work to use 3 of the pendants you (larger ones) centered over the eating area...and one recessed task light centered over your stainless steel sink...you could also use two recessed task lights and center them over your counter space on either side of the sink....you don't want more than 3 hanging pendants in that area...way too busy. Love your layout, it's very similar to a remodel we're doing right now! Please show pictures! I'm using 6 recessed cans in our space...we have one wall that is 12 feet (fridge in same place as yours) and another that runs 11 feet...so I wish we had the space to add the counter height bar, we're just using the sink/dishwasher and storage on other side then extending the bar out in an arch for seating. I'm using a hanging double light over our bar area instead of pendants...but I love the look of 3 pendants with the size bar you have! What sink are you using? We got an Elkay that is 24 inches wide and 21 inches deep..it looks very big but hoping it will work in that space..your island sink looks as big, too! :) Would love to hear how you're working the venting in the island for the dishwasher and disposal... Comments (7)We used hanging pendants made by Roost. They only sell to wholesalers who then retail them. We bought ours locally, via our builder, from a design center so got a deal. Don't know hwat you can find in your area, but I have provided an online link below. We also used the Edison-reproduction, multi-filament bulbs they show in the pic. They are about 11 bucks each w/ shipping, but look waaaaaaay cool, esp. when dimmed, and provide all the light you need when at full power. If you go that way, order some spares. We have not had a burnout in 4 years, but we do not use them daily. Also, we did not want a track sitting across our ceiling to steal the eye away from the task lighting hanging below. There is seating for 3 on the right side of the L. Here is a link that might be useful: Roost retailer link...See MorePendant placement?
Comments (8)Visualizing with balloons or anything (tin foil pie pans, etc) is a great help! I used matt board cut into 16" disks and hung them from the ceiling when the electricians were setting the boxes and then again once the cabinets/granite were in place. Not sure I got it perfectly right, but it was close. Our island is 72" wide but is separated from the adjacent cabinets by a 42" walkway all around. I spaced my pendants (2) close enough to look like one large "island/billard pendant" when installed - rather than 2 smallish pendants (we have a big structural beam directly above the island so we could not have just one fixture). We need the light that these fixtures provide - we ordered 2 mini-chandeliers with 4 candles x 60 watts each - over 500 watts of light right where we need it most. They are enroute now - hope I like them! Good luck in your decision....See Morependant placement on island
Comments (4)To figure out whether three pendants is enough, it's important to know: What is the wattage on each light? We have two 60 watt bulbs over our kitchen sink area, lighting about 55 inches of countertop, so if your lights are 60 or 75 watts each, I think you would be OK. Because of the two different counter heights, I might nudge the lights just a bit past the centerline of 27" -- perhaps 30 inches away from the counter side, so that a pool of light will fall onto the taller cabinet portion of the counter. I would not center the lights over the taller counter, though, because then you could end up with a dark shadow at the part of the lower counter where it meets the taller area....See MoreRelated Professionals
