IME, pocket doors don't get closed often. You can just leave them open most of the time.

It doesn't look like very much hanging space to me. Where there are three rods stacked would there really be enough vertical space for that to work? Would you be able to reach the top rod to take things down and put them back up? If you haven't already, measure how much rod space you need for your stuff. We don't all have the same requirements. Reach in closets are practical, as Lyn said, as long as you have doors on them that fully pull back (bi-fold) or open out.

In our first house we had a similar closet space. We put double rods on the short walls (no need for a PAX cabinet) and a bookcase on the long wall facing the pocket doors. Gives plenty of room to maneuver. I measured the height of my shoes for shelves so that no space was lost. I used lots of shelves so nothing had to be stacked too high.

I agree with the others. Center the door on the 8’ wall. Hanging on both short walls. Shallow storage 4’ wide centered on the long wall.

Thank you all - Houzz is such a great resource! I edited the original post to show the floor plan. We would be able to center the door on one of the closets so will most likely change to that and the other closet may just be a little tight.

To answer a few other notes:

We will talk to a cusotm closet company. We have used Ikea for closets in our past house and loved them but they were a little more straight forward.

3 rods for pants only does work for my husband, he has had that configuration before and specifically requested it if possible.

I had a small walk in closet in my last home. I used the Pax System in my closet for a temporary solution. I had to remove my door, since it would hit one of the units. I used the mirror doors on them, since I didn't want my clothes in site. When I remodeled my bathroom, I update my closets i decided to upgrade my closets using easyclosets.com. They have a great on line tool you can use to design your closet using your exact measurements, you can talk with a representative to help you if you can't figure it out. My husband and I are pretty handy, so we did the installation ourselves. It is so much cheaper than The Container Store and California Closets. I had a 30" opening for the door, so I used 2-15" doors that opened inward to the closet. If you center your door on the 8' closet and then put your hanging on both short walls or a combination of hanging and shelves for folded clothes, you would be able to open the doors all the way flush with the wall. so you can skip the pocket doors. Your shelves could be on the long wall. We like the easy closets so much, we used them in our new home for every closet and saved thousands of dollars.

The Pax system will be cheaper, but you are limited with the sizes/widths they offer. Using my suggestion of centering the door and using 2 15" doors, I would use the 39"X22 on each of the short walls for hanging (double hanging on one side and long hanging on the other) and then use the 39" X13" centered on the long wall for shoes and folded clothes, so you won't feel cramped when you step into your closet. Stay away from those corner units, they have less accessibility to your hanging clothes and are expensive and IMO not worth it.

You didn't show the smaller closet design from Ikea. I would use a 39x22 on the right wall and then on the long wall I would use a 39X13 & a 29X13 starting on the left side for shoes and folded clothes and his pants racks (they come in the 39 & 29). Then you would be able to use a 28" door without hitting the shelves. Again skipping the pocket doors. You would have a little space for a belt rack or hooks along the short wall on the door wall.
