Vines Garden Clinic garden

Help identifying vine?

In an area of brush, zone 5, I have this vine that is choking out young trees and bushes, despite my efforts to clip the stems at the base every season. It just keeps spreading. Can anyone identify it? There are thornes on the stems and leaves are in clusters of 3.

Rubus species or hybrid. ie a bramble or blackberry. Is the last picture definitely the same plant?

I think the last picture is just a little blurry and it's the same plant, some kind of creeping blackberry. If you're on the eat coast it's likely Northern dewberry

i see no vine.. so your term is confusing me ... i cant focus on the leaves ... even hitting the pic as a link .. it reminds me of arching bramble ... of which.. now that i google lin's suggestion.. we appear to be agreeing ... lol .. i thought she was meaning currant ... ribes ... ken

looks like a sweet potato of the edible variety not the ornamental.....

Looks like wintercreeper, Euonymus fortunei'Emerald Gaiety'. Technically not a vine but can have a lax, scrambling habit and an ability to grow up the sides of walls or fences. It can be an aggressive spreader under some situations but I would not consider it invasive. Many people here grow it as a shrub, controlled and shaped by annual pruning. ETA: floral's ID maybe on the mark :-) The nodes between the leaves is a bit much for wintercreeper, as is the stem elongation but that's still a possibility.

clipping anything is called pruning.. NOTHING DIES FROM PRUNING ALONE...

you must apply a stump killer after you make the cut.;. i used to use roundup ...undiluted...

a handy applicator like this is hard to lose.. precise with minimal application... and must be stored away from the hot dogs ...

try the NAME THAT PLANT forum next time...

"NOTHING DIES FROM PRUNING ALONE"

Well, Rubus certainly won't but plenty of plants will die if cut down at the base. Using that sweeping generalisation to make gardening decisions could lead to trouble.

LEAVE ABOUT 12 INCHES OF THE VINE THAT STICKS OUT THE GROUND. SCRAPE OFF ABOUT 2 INCHES OFF THE SKIN OF THE VINE. NOW PLACE. THE SKINNED VINE INTO A SMALL BOTTLE OF WEED KILLER. NOW BRACE THE BOTTLE SO IT DOSEN'T FALL OVER. THIS WILL KILL THE BULB BELOW THE GROUND. YOU CAN ORDER OR BUY AT A FLORIST THE SMALL PLATIC BOTTLES THAT USE TO KEEP THEIR SOLD FLOWERS FRESH. HERE IN FLORIDA, WE HAVE A BIG PROBLEM WITH THE THRONNEY VINES.
