Almonds? (adding this to get the required number of charachters)

Seems I thought I was running low on almonds......twice......so I have 2 pounds of whole almonds with just a handful taken out. I don't add them to brownies or cinnamon rolls and the only almond cookie I make uses one on each cookie....I do make biscotti which used about a cup per batch, and toss af ew sliverred unto a salad or on some greenbeans...

What else?

You could just eat them as they are rather than bake sugary treats with them. A few almonds everyday are extremely good for your health. https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/howto/guide/health-benefits-almonds

They can also be added to salads and savoury dishes.

I harvested almonds for the first time this year. I thought it was a Hall's semi-dwarf. The nuts were covered with a very hard green outer shell, not easy to remove. As I also grow macadamias, I decided to dry the almonds in the sun as I do the macadamias as they need drying to loosen the inner nutmeat away from the shell. The almonds dried seemingly OK, and I proceeded to dry them. All seemed OK, and I froze them in freezer containers for later use. Today, I made granola and decided to use those almonds - so toasted them. They became spongy, soft, and I noted there was a hollow line inside. They didn't seem to taste the way store almonds do when toasted. Perhaps they needed spraying or something, or is this the same problems other have had with this particular tree? Bejay

loves2cook4six- You can find any number of How-To links and videos on line, but here's what I do for plain, unsweetened, almond milk. 1. Place 1-cup of almonds in a quart canning jar. Fill with clear water + 1/2 t. sea salt (mix to dissolve the salt). The salt aids in reducing the hard-to-digest phytates, but doesn't make the milk salty. 2. Soak at least 6-hours, or up to 24-hours. I do 24 if I want to easily slip the skins off the almonds, but you can leave the skins on if you'd like (I do both). 3. Drain and rinse well in a colander. Remove skins, if you'd like. 4. Place almonds + 2 to 2-1/2 c. of water in a high-speed blender and blend well for 5-8 minutes. This ratio of almonds and water yields a concentrated form of almond milk. I can thin it with water, as needed, when using it. You will find recipes that use more water. Your choice.... 5. Strain the blended almond milk in a nut milk bag (fine-mesh strainer, or several layers of cheese cloth). Twist the bag tight and squeeze the almond milk out of the pulp. 6. Refrigerate the almond milk and use within 4- to 7-days. 7. The pulp can be used "raw" in recipes (you can find many on-line -- I make a granola-like cereal, crackers, etc.). You can store the raw pulp in the refrigerator for 1-2 days, or freezer, until needed. To dehydrate it, I place it on the fruit leather sheets, spread in a thin layer. Dehydrate 125- to 135-degrees F. When dry, blend into a fine flour and store in the refrigerator (if using it quickly, or freezer, until needed. -Grainlady

You or your sister should contact several electrical contractors for cost estimates on what you want to do. Know what you want to do in advance, and be specific, including where you want stuff located. Then ask each contractor to estimate the cost for the exact same specification. You're likely to get a range of cost estimates, but with any luck, they should be fairly similar. If they vary wildly, seek a couple of more estimates, then you'll have an idea of what's reasonable. Ask each contractor for references, and check them. A permit will be needed. PG&E won't install a meter or connect you to the grid until the work is inspected and signed off. PG&E may or may not charge to install the meter, but you will have to pay for the box to which the meter attaches, and whatever appurtenances are necessary to connect the service to the building. If you don't want to deal with the required permits, get the contractors to include permits in their estimates. It's often faster and easier for electricians to pull the required permits because they often know the staff in the planning department, and they know the technical language for exactly what they need. Once you settle on a contractor, he'll pull the permit (unless you decide to do it yourself), do the work, then arrange for the inspection. Your sister will probably have to arrange for the customer account with PG&E, and for the power connection, but the electrician can probably advise her on when to schedule it. If you want a house gas meter, you'll need a plumbing contractor, too. The same plan of action would apply. Personally, if it were me, I might be inclined to go for an all electric laundry. It might be much less costly than installing a gas line just for a clothes dryer, at least up front. PG&E is usually pretty easy to deal with. I'm not sure about Oakland's planning department.

jsjames: I have read often that up to 135 degrees in total bends is OK. So, this means it is possible to have three 45-degree bends, but the full and complete answer will depend on the other factors concerning the pipe geometry in space (length, drop). I gave you key words to search on instead of trying to answer the question directly. As I am not a plumber, my wording of any answer might be imprecise (and thus wrong in some way). In previous threads when I have tried to give specific answers I have found my explanation was not precise enough so it was partly wrong and needed to be modified. -- The second response you received said you needed to upsize to a 2" pipe. This is wrong. A trap arm can be 1.5" all the way to the vent. A trap arm is not upsized to 2". A trap arm is the trap's horizontal "tailpiece" and its extensions, up to the vent. Thank you to manhattan42 for posting California code: -- Table 7-3 says "Min. Size Trap and Trap Arm" in the column header Both Trap Arm and Trap are considered together as a unit. I am extremely disappointed to see that "excluding trap arms" was not quoted by lazypup when he DID quote the other words verbatim "except sinks, urinals, and dishwashers" ; this is another form of avoidance, and it causes more problems than ever when the MOST relevant information is removed from a direct quote or reference. This is usually seen as intellectual dishonesty. Many people will let the "main man" have his way... but I'm also disappointed in brickeyee for acting as a bully-follower (posting as if to confirm that 2" pipe is now required). We REALLY need to have more than one main person in this plumbing forum. That is why I wrote we need another plumber in this forum. Otherwise, this forum is just one guy's sandbox. And who will double-check him if he won't double-check himself? He may not even be lucid any more. Almond butter? If you want to blanch and peel them (I used to—it's thankless, but worthwhile), and if you can grind them, there's a whole world of frangipane, marzipan, macarons. Most other things I know use them by the tablespoon, like romesco sauce or a tahchin. You can always dip them in colored lacquer, drill holes and string them up for holiday decorations... The easiest things I can think of are almond brittle, oatmeal/muesli/granola, and big trays of spiced almonds, but I think spiced nuts go soggy in the freezer. :( Or you could crush them for caramel apples, crumbles, protein bars...even rocky road ice cream, cake or s’mores.

Oh, someone here told me if you don't have enought title characters, and don't want to add filler words, you can fill with spaces. The only problem is if you edit, you have to put them back, because the posting routing takes out extra spaces.

I think I'd freeze them. There was a Doc on the radio this week who said that the benefits you get from eating a few every day are greatly outweighed by the hefty calorie count. I like to make chocolate almond bark for holiday gifts - my recipe's super simple and uses a pound of them...

Orange Scented Chocolate Almond Bark

1 pound chocolate (I use 42% semi sweet chips)

Approx. 1 tsp. finely grated orange peel or a few drops of orange essential oil (or any other flavoring you like)

2 cups/1#(approx.) roasted almonds*, very coarsely chopped - reserve a tsp. or 2 very finely chopped nuts for dusting

Approx. 3/4 tsp. flaked sea salt 

Directions:

Line a large cooky sheet with parchment paper.

In a bowl set over a saucepan of gently simmering water, heat the chocolate, stirring until it is mostly melted; do not let the bowl touch the water. Add the orange peel and stir until the chocolate is completely melted & smooth. Do not overheat.

Stir the prepared nuts into the chocolate, mixing well, and turn out onto the lined baking sheet, spreading in a thin layer. Sprinkle with the reserved finely chopped nuts & then the sea salt, crushing the salt flakes as you sprinkle them on.

Refrigerate the pan with the bark on it for about 20-30 minutes, until hardened. Remove the bark from the parchment paper, break into pieces and store in the fridge or serve at once. 

* other nuts may be used instead of almonds

To Roast Nuts:

Preheat oven to 350F

Spread whole nuts in a single layer on a baking sheet or pan.

Bake for 5 minutes, then stir and bake for another 5 minutes. Check for color. If nuts are still not done, stir & bake an additional 1-2 minutes at a time until golden brown. Check often, since nuts can burn quickly!

To remove skins, place slightly cooled nuts in a clean, dry towel, gather the towel around the nuts & rub vigorously. Skins should come off, but if they don’t, it’s OK.

Cool & chop coarsely - or nuts may be used whole, if desired.

Note: Chocolate may be melted in the microwave in 30 second bursts, stirring each time until melted. You can do this in a large microwave safe bowl, then stir in the nuts.

I keep all my nuts in the freezer too. Dh loves to eat almonds by the handful. He gets the dry roasted ones from Trader Joe's.

I recently made a roasted garlic pesto with dry roasted slivered almonds. Absolutely delicious! I did omit the anchovies.

Toffee

Easy to make, and it makes good gifts or stocking stuffers for Christmas. Almonds must be unsalted for this, and my toffee contains no salt.

I go through biscotti quickly when I make them

and I give these at Christmas also.
