Also, would love to understand pros and cons to a rain style shower head vs a traditional head.

Your inspiration bath is several times the size of yours, so bear that in mind, as it will affect the feeling of the space. Our new shower is 3' x 5', with one shower head and one handheld shower. It feels plenty spacious, yet it isn't so large it gets cold. We chose a solid MTI base.

A 40" double vanity is way too small; even 48" is tight.

You might be able to make this work without the bump-out by moving the door and running the vanity along the side wall.

What is wood vinyl?

I understand that the "inspiration" photo is much larger, we already had these ideas before we found the photo. The photo is mainly to show the wall color, wood tones and the fixtures.

Sadly, it doesn't look like there is an MTI dealer anywhere in our area.

40" vanity will work fine for us, we currently work with a single 25" sink, plus the door is a pocket door, which gains us space, and we would not be able to move.

I meant plank vinyl that is a wood tone/style like in the photo.

Moving a wall with plumbing sounds hugely expensive compared to the benefits you are getting from it, so i’d stick with smaller footprint. that small of a vanity with 2 sinks looks too cramped and there is zero counterspace. i’d do a single sink and have space to set my soap or toothbrush.

I had a 54” double vanity. I would say that it’s the smallest one that works with two sinks. The 45” with one sink will be great. As for the rain shower, it’s fine as long as you have a regular shower head and/or wand that you can use when the rain head is shut off. Say, for instance when you don’t want to get your hair wet or a body part wet for medical reasons.

Another question for you!

We live up in northern MN, so we have very cold freezing temps up here and typically contractors wont/we are not able to put water lines on exterior walls due to chance of freezing...do you have any ideas or work arounds for that? On my/our layout drawing the top and RH wall are exterior walls.

Michael, Full disclosure: I am not a plumbing contractor and lived in NYC and LA where freezing pipes are usually not an issue. I had a cabin in PA where we heavily insulated the pipes and had a floor heater installed but is was not as cold as in MN. Here is a plan you can discuss with your contractor.

My plumber friend, who works on houseboats (and formerly ships) told me: In order to keep a pipe from freezing insulation is not enough, there needs to be a supply of heat. The idea is the core is not insulated at the top but is exposed to the living area below so heat from the living area keeps the upper rooms warm. It's not a gaping hole in the middle of your bathroom, it's a vent or cabinet that is open to below. This along with baseboard heating and insulation is what I suggest.

Also, after renovating many bathrooms, the floor is usually ripped up to make sure the joists and plumbing etc. are up to code. Do what design you would like, as a bath reno lasts forever, is a considerable expense and there will be no surprises.

I just quickly drew over the plan Denise so kindly put effort into. Tape out on the floor a 48x60 shower vs. other sizes. Just to see what feels right. If 36x60 would also work you could get in a lot more vanity and storage.

Thank you both Valerie and Denise! I really appreciate you time and help and insights. For the water issue, I think I can add a vent in the ceiling in the room below for the vanity piping which could take care of that issue.

Denise, would you be willing to take your layout and shift the 48x60 shower straight down to the bottom RH corner and make it an alcove style with a wall on the top? We have vent piping that goes through the roof in the upper right corner. and then create a cabinet in the space on the upper right corner that extends into the available space ~16". We will lose some floor space, but I think it would be a nice compromise to some of the work arounds. I just tried to do a bit with my snipping tool, so no clue on how it would actually "fit" in the space.

Consider having the vent plumbing chase (in upper right corner) as tight as possible and recess the closet to 18" deep. The reason for this is to get that glass corner for the shower as in your inspiration pic, and visually roomier floor space, instead of a long run elevation.

If there is room on the upper right corner vent chase, it's a perfect place for a recessed niche in the shower. Also, take advantage of recessed medicine cabinets, my fav is Robern and worth the cost.

Remember, there was no indication as to the entry door and window location. The door was moved down in the plan to accommodate the vanity front clearance.

Even a 60" double vanity is tight. You don't have room for a double vanity.

60” double vanities are definitely not ideal. I was trying to squeeze a freestanding tub into my own master bath, but when I saw a 60” double vanity in person it was a solid no. Our Home Depot has some in store so you can get a feel for it. In these situations I think a trough sink with 2 faucets makes for better counter space. I like to maximize counter space in all projects. You could take the vanity counter all the way to the hvac chase and install an upper cabinet, open shelves, or nothing above all that extra counter space. I also favor sliding shower doors as long as the door can be wider than 24”. Swing shower door take up a lot of floor space and tend to get water on the floor when they swing open after a shower. As for the trough sinks/vanities, do you guys have any recommendations as to where to get/find them? Otherwise would it be more of a custom top with vanity bottom?

Sources really depend on budget. There are a few for sale here on Houzz. Just type in “undermount trough bath sink”. For average projects Wayfair, thebathoutlet.com, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. For higher budget projects Native Trails makes beautiful sinks and Build.com has a large selection with a wide price range. The easiest to clean will be an undermount or an integrated. I’d also be tempted to install a side sprayer between the faucets for cleaning the sink or washing a small dog.

A few brands have pull out sprayers on the bath faucets. Also, they aren’t always called “trough” sinks. A lot of the time you have to use search filters and put 30” as a minimum width. Then you can find them.
