Foyer idea -- built-in bench as a room divider?
Comments (10)Min- Congrats on the lot...I think it's going to be a wonderful choice, for you and your family :) An informal entry is great, because it means it gets used...by everyone! I'm so glad you get to use your table. If that's the case, then I vote for making the 'dining room' the piano space, with bookcases and maybe a couple of comfy chairs in the corner, by the window. One thing about the entry...if you put the hooks by the door, everyone stops to take off their coat and you get a bottleneck at the doorway. Instead, I'd move the hooks down to the area between the den doors and the stairs. This way, everyone gets inside, before they stop to sit down or take off their coats. The bench idea is interesting...but I would put it opposite the hooks, towards the kitchen. Again, you don't want people stopping too soon and there would be more room to sit down and not block 'traffic'. Instead of having it open, I think I'd put a back to the bench and have the piano tucked behind it, against the wall to the kitchen. A piano should be against an inside wall, so that's where I would put it, instead of against the garage. Then, you could have chairs in the corner, by the window (against the garage and window walls) to sit down, read a book, listen to music, etc. It would also be a nice 'adult' space, when the kids get a little older :)...See MoreShow me your Foyer Bench!
Comments (9)Wow, What lovely foyers you have! Mimi, first of all, I fell in love with your railing and the steps-Why? Because they are wrought iron and wood like mine :). I like the look. The size of your bench looks about right to me. I think I might do better with no arms. BTW, love your floor. Threed, you are so right. My goodness, Target had things I didn't know they carried including benches. They had a couple that I liked, but no free shipping. This lets me know that I need to keep Target in my eye sight. Oakle, love your floor also. It musst be nice to have a carpenter around that does good work. That's a nice bench. Looks to be in an ideal place from where I sit. Sueb, at least it'a your church pew :). Hmm, wonder if the pastor would understand if I told him I am having church at home, lol. Good idea and cheap. Lynn, love your bench and the pillow, too. Looks very sturdy. Glad to see that you guys don't have massive benches. These are the sizes I think my foyer could handle. Mythree, what a lovely bench-great detail and a beautiful color. I love how you guys put things together and it just looks good. Ooh Claire--beautiful. Thank you. I really like one and three. Four is a little dramatic for me and I am the drama queen(giggle). Each one gives me ideas though. Ok, I ordered a bench today from JCP. It has the look of wrought iron, not sure if it said it was. I think the size is right. It was on sale, I got an additional $10 off plus free shipping. I won't tell you which one because I hope it will be a part of the Big Reveal! I am always so impressed with how willing people are to share on this board. I spend too much time at GW. Thanks to all of who shared. Peachie...See MoreLove my new foyer bench ! Comments (3)Can you take a straight on shot of the foyer so we can better see the area rug placement? From looking at the floor on the sides of the walls it looks like it's off center. That would bug me. I think I'd prefer a long runner. How wide is the entrance/hall? Maybe a small area rug at the door and then a runner. Very pretty house! I'd leave your console with mirror as is. It looks nice. I really like the bench but that's a long wall. I like the above suggestions. I also wondered about doing three related groupings. Something right over the bench and one on each side. Whatever you do with art I think large. I think the photos and diploma frames are too small. If you want to use them I'd get larger frames and mat them. Are they 8x10s? At least 11x14s and you can easily find mats and frames inexpensively for that size. ETA- Looking again, it looks like the bench is centered on that wall and the area rug intrudes into it's space. I think we need to see a different view of the foyer area but I think (hard to tell) if you keep the rug the bench would look better moved down more to the left. With art then above it it would be anchored and look intentional event though it's not centered on the wall. I had to do this with my foyer. The buffet I have is moved down because of the door so the mirror and buffet aren't centered but it doesn't look weird if that makes sense. Also, could you put the front feet of the console over the area rug so that it's centered? Again, hard to tell. These suggestions may not work but things to consider/try!...See MoreFoyer Advice for Entrance Way
Comments (14)My priorities would be to 1) replace out of place oversized clock with a mirror (last minute exit/ entry hair checks, etc), 2) replace "boob" light with hanging light(this ties with first priority for me. Shudder), 3) declutter table (place a nice bowl or small basket for keys, mail, etc);theres too much on there now that doesn't look very functional, 4) Add an appropriate sized piece of favorite artwork across from table....See MoreLori
