Knotty pine paneling, need flooring style suggestions
Comments (17)I have yellowed knotty pine on the walls of my late 40s/early 50s beach cottage with oak flooring. Works for me (primarily because I got a great deal on the oak when I was looking to replace the skanky and probably original early 50s carpet), but I was really intrigued by the possibility of using cork or real linoleum flooring in the room. I think it would have looked great - it was just a bit pricey in my situation. Both are supposed to hold up to pet traffic very well and happen to be more or less era appropriate with a room full of knotty pine....See MoreUpdating 20-yr old knotty pine.
Comments (2)Seal-a-Cell followed by Arm-R-Seal topcoat is one top quality option that can be wiped on with a 100% white cotton pad or a foam brush. Woodcraft Supply is a source. Check the video tutorials at General Finishes about the color wash. You can also email them for recommendations. They also have water based products....See Moreneed help with knotty pine floor stain
Comments (6)How thick is your planking, true hardwood or a thin veneer? Priming Bare Wood (linked to article) If you are deciding to paint bare wood, you should seal all knots (spot prime) with a shellac based primer. Shellac based primers are great for sealing wood knots and sap streaks. They do carry a pungent odour, but dry very quickly and will not let the knot bleed through the top (finish) coat. If you are looking to stain your bare wood, you don’t not have to seal the knots with a primer, heavily saturating the knots with stain will do. Removing all dried up and oozing sap is a must, especially when dealing with woods such as fir or pine. After removing the sap build up, use an appropriate primer/sealer to seal in the sap affected areas....See MoreKnotty pine kitchen update
Comments (20)uh yeah, that is way too much pine! yeesh. I do think that kitchen would look way better painted. and of course consider new hardware too, including smaller hinges. note that you will have to prime the heck out of it first, or you'll get bleed through on the knots. I love your kitchen BTW! normally I don't like 1950s wood valances, but I really like yours. and that sink! even the vent detail below it. so much potential! as for what color to pick: are you keeping your countertops? if so, keep the color scheme simple, like below (sorry the photo is so tiny, I couldn't find a better example). or if you were thinking of changing the counters... I really like this look of white cabinets, white walls, and black counter/backsplash. I would have never thought to just paint the cabinet fronts and leave the rest, but this is really pretty (they need to back off on the clutter though, and no to those curtains)....See MoreHU-439176460
