Without a signed contract, you may be left hanging in the wind. It might also depends on the state you live in. If your contractor is registered with the state you may still have access to state funds, in my state, a portion of each registration fee goes into a slush fund to be distributed to homeowners who have been left high and dry by their contractors. To have access to the funds though you need a registered contractor and you need a signed contract. Again, that's in my state. The BBB is a fairly toothless organization. My opinion. But still lodge a complaint. Mechanics lien waivers should always be secured. This isn't legal-ese, but my wording, according to how things have evolved over the years: A "mechanic" is someone who has either done work (GC or sub) on your house, or a party who has supplied materials (supply house, etc) used in your house. If either is not paid, they can file a mechanic's lien on your house. The lien essentially dirties a clean title. Were you to sell your house, with a lien in place on your property you would be unable to transfer a clean title to the new buyer until the lien is satisfied, or paid off. The tough part is that you can pay the GC the entire sum of the contract...but if he doesn't pay off the sub, or doesn't pay his account at the supply house, the sub or supply house can STILL place a lien on your property and to clear it you'd essentially have to pay twice. That's the reason for a mechanic's lien waiver. It's simply something that a sub signs, the GC signs, or an authority at the supply house signs to release you from a lien being filed by that party. Things can vary state-by-state, so do a simple search for "mechanics lien waiver Texas" and see what comes up. The waiver form doesn't have to be fancy or frilly. Just a simple release form that states that the party has been paid for work at the address with signature and date signed. If your area requires permits, was a building permit ever pulled? If he pulled the permit and a final inspection has not been accomplished, you'll have an open permit on your property in his name. Is your guy licensed and insured in your state? Did you ask for license and insurance numbers and verify? The reason I say "verify" is that a couple of years ago I caught an unlicensed guy doing work under my licensing numbers. He had a very bad day when I showed up on his work site. Not having a contract hurts you, at least it would up here in CT, as there is no proof of any binding terms between the two parties. Not sure how TX works. Another thing that could be in your favor is if he was doing plumbing and/or electrical and not qualified. Those are licensed trades here in my state and need separate permits pulled for the respective work done. With him buffooning your plumbing it sounds like he has limited abilities and is not licensed. Texas did have a dispute resolution commission but it was disbanded last year as the board members, generally builders, always sided with the builder. You may have to do some internet searching to see what, if any, programs or assets are available to you. But with no contract in place, your best bet is to try to resolve things directly with the guy who is now stonewalling you. Try to get the work done, try to get cash in hand and arrange for the new door to be installed on your own, or take him to court. Again, not formal advice, just my ideas.

@sven_erte - you are thinking about replacing - there is another option - u could simply replace the handles - since u have identified the manufacturer u can review their online catalog and get that done. With regards to the spout - u might consider re-plating the spout to give it a newer look and replacing the aerator. this way u can still be assured that you are getting a new look but not taking on any risk by getting a new spout. There are some highly rated faucet plating companies which you could use.

Can I get in on this conversation with a question? I have something similar in my 22 year old house. It is three stories. We do not have city sewer. We sometimes have a sewer gas odor that comes up the vents in two bathrooms only. They are exactly on top of each other. We have had a plumber out to the house three separate times. At first he said make sure to keep traps wet. We did that, smell sometimes comes back. He came out again, same thing and checked everything. Last time he said that all fixtures go into one large vent pipe on roof. Husband got up there and sure enough only one for 4.5 baths, washer, etc. The smell is only in these two bath areas. There is one bath below these two exactly as well. He said tub downstairs is not used much and trap could be dry. He extended the vent pipe up several feet in the air. He said sometimes when weather system moves in, it can hold gases down. We have absolutely no idea what this could be. It only happens every couple of weeks, but when it does, it smells so bad. We have also smelled this outside once or twice and it was so bad, I was so embarrassed. We were gone one week and our friends walked by the house to make sure everything was okay. They said they thought something BIG had died there and they actually walked around the back of the house but could not find anything. Please any thoughts. Desperate in NC

Since the tile is vinyl, then it won't be so beastly to remove. If this was my house, I would tile because it's not that difficult, really...we usually rent a wet saw...There are some beautiful floor tiles around at reasonable costs. You probably want a wood look tile in gray. Fortunately that's popular and popular is usually less expensive and easily available, so win win. I love your paint choice and I think you should stick with it. Paint your cabs white or whatever color the shower is (we're using Benjamin Moore Advance after trying others. It goes on well and gives a good finish). If you have large builder grade mirror, I would keep it so you have more light bouncing around. They sell frame kits for them so they look less boring. I don't know what your lighting is like, but using led bulbs will make a huge difference. Personally that would do it for me to be happy for quite a while :)
