can i mix athens gray marble with white subway tile?
Comments (7)As you see in my second picture, the marble is on top of 4x4s. I put the pencil in because I thought it needed the line to define the two materials, and it mimicked the bottom of the chair rail detailing. What I hadn't counted on was that the thickness of the marble causing layout problems like you are anticipating. So, I made the pencil just a bit raised from the 4x4, so it would transition to the depth of the marble. I laid the 4x4 as normal and the marble as normal. The pencil, I laid thick to help with the transition. Tiling is a good exercise in humbleness. Nothings perfect and my tile job reflects that. I remind myself everyday as I see my tiny imperfections and remember laying this tile or that tile. The montauk is black and I got it at Home Depot via special order at 2.99/sf. It was 12x12 and I cut it to 12x6....See MoreMarble-look porcelain floor tiles in kitchen?
Comments (20)The house I grew up in had those asbestos tiles on a cement slab. My knees, feet and hips still feel the unforgiving nature of those. Anything dropped on them was lost, shattered or broken. Since then, I have had all different types of flooring except tile for that very reason, but, I recently installed tile in my master bathroom and the downstairs half bath, but nowhere else. Depending on where you live, Florida vs Minnesota, can make a difference also. Florida is nice to have those cool tiles on your feet and they are easier to clean than a lot of other surfaces. Tile in Minnesota is just down right cold. That being said, it is a very formal look and, IMHO, needs a very formal venue for it to look its best. Everyone is doing the whole "all the flooring needs to be the same", but I disagree. I think in the powder room and mud room, your marble like can be very practical. I think in the kitchen, it is impractical. I think in the foyer, it lends itself to a very formal setting. But, this is just my opinion....See MorePlease help source black tile for checkerboard pattern
Comments (3)Yes - that's the other problem. Do you think the space can handle a 30 x 30 tile. The pink linoleum pattern is 12 x 12. Do you have any tile for this project? I guess a dark grey would work too as that is really just light black in essence....See MoreBath tile help! Marble floor and white subway shower combo.
Comments (14)Mary, if you start your own post you'll get more help. But white subway/white hex can fit a lot of diff looks. what's the vanity? the countertop? the walls? how big is the bathroom? is it shower or tub or both? These are all white subway w/either a white hex or a black hex, w/diff sizes and diff tile layouts. notice all of the other items in the room. it doesn't have to be simple if you don't just use plain, generic white on every surface. instead of a white hex floor, try some blue pennies, or the white/blue pattern tile or, go w/a black hex notice the stacked layout of the white tile. gives it a more modern look (Bedrosians Makoto tile) wood vanities and gold or black fixtures bring in warmth/texture. even the shower tile layout gets a more interesting look...See MoreDeWayne
