Do you need Crepe Mrytle
Comments (5)rosepedal/Barb, They came from out of my area. Without knowing what zone they came from, I wouldn't want to try them only to maybe be disappointed after they froze out. Might you know what member sent them to you?...assuming they had been shared by an enabler here. ps your dwarf crepe myrtle picture is to die for Was that a hint maybe? I'd be glad to send you some. No trade needed. At 8' tall, is that too big? I suppose it could even be grown in a huge pot, and moved outside once spring arrives. This year it seemed to bloom twice, something it hasn't done before. It was prettier this year than it has ever been. Sue...chemocurl...See More9 Year old Live Oak Tree: Should it stay or go
Comments (18)zookeeper, that is not enough space (the circle of bricks)for a live oak. In the next 10 years it will probably outgrow that space and you will have more patio paver trouble. Which do You want, the patio as it is or the tree? Not sure exactly how close the tree is to your house, but if there is one oak tree that you could have close to your house it would be the live oak. It is very wind resistant and the wood from these trees was used to make Old Ironsides because of its physical properties. They usually survive huricanes very well. That said they also can die of a fungus depending on where your are at. Then you are faced with removing it. We have two 12" diameter ones at 24 ft. from house. Every other year I prune lower branches to direct them away from the house, other wise they would grow over the roof. Eventually the upper limbs may do the same, but we're not there yet. There are hundreds of houses in Waco built just as close to large live oaks as yours seems to be without too much obvious hassle, so it can be done. If it were me, and you need the shade, and tree is in open with no other competition for sun, I would leave just the middle fork so you can have a balanced tree, one that grows limbs out in all directions and doesn't lean toward the house. With every other year pruning you should be able to keep limbs off of the house without much hassle. These trees typically don't get over 45' tall unless they are in a lot of competition for sun. If you're from a drier part of the country where trees seldom exceed 35' you might leave all 3 forks....See MoreCrepe Myrtle Tree with one dead trunk
Comments (4)What ever happened to the one trunk, if you take care of the plant you can have multiple trucks it will just take time. The number of trucks is entirely up to you and how you trim he suckers from the plant. We live east of Raleigh NC, and I have seen some that are one or two trucks that go 20 to 30 feet in to the air. I have seen some equally old plants that are 10 to 15 feet with dozen of trunks. In some ways they are tree like in their growth habits. They grow relatively fast in the first years and then take years to get big....See MoreRoot Bound Crepe Mrytles
Comments (3)I too lost trees because of hurricane Rita. The only tree left was an old Persimmon that we planned on cutting down. My back yard looked like a parking lot and was horrible. The trees didn't fall on the house so we were lucky. Replanting seemed so difficult and I went back to work and made enough money to hire a landscaper. We planted a Drake Elm in the corner and five big crepe myrtles that have never stopped blooming. They were much higher than my lawn and should mature into trees. The birds love them. The new landscaping is pretty and the old Persimmon tree looks good now but I miss the shade and sound of my big old trees. My heart goes out to you and the loss of your trees. Good Luck with the Crepe Myrtles....See MorePv Picotte
