Updating study without painting

We want to make some minor changes to this study in a way that preserves its vintage look while adding some modern elements, esp. in the countertop/table area and handles. (The table area is peeling polyurethane coats in a couple of places has taken some beating over the years). Since we don't want to paint the cabinets, one of the GCs proposed substituting the tabletop with whitish stone like granite or quartz and adding new handles/hardware. Has anyone done something similar? I would love to see some designs! Also, open to other suggestions. Thanks!
