It depends on the product. Gloss dissipates exterior so most satins end up looking like eggshell sooner than later.

Regular paint isn't the best choice to change the color of brick. Should be a mineral product like RomaBio, can get it at The Home Depot.

DO NOT PAINT THE BRICK WITH ACRYLIC BASED PAINT.

The brick has to be painted with masonry paint like Romabio otherwise the acrylic paints seal in the moisture in the brick and then the paint peels, the mortar fails and the brick wall can fail and slump.

Painting the shakes and the bricks the same bland color is the best you can come up with? Trim back any bushes that have grown taller than the sills on your windows first.

IMO a two tone paint job like this would be MUCH MORE INTERESTING. Paint the upper portion gray and limewash the bottom portion over the red brick.

Or if you want to do one color, select a gray paint like you wee below with white trim to keep things interesting. I'd consider adding shutters to the windows. Is it absolutely correct, nope. But it will make the house more interesting visually.

Thanks for the input! Yes, we have removed all the bushes in the front of the house. Such an improvement! I considered adding wood window headers and painting the garage doors in a wood gel finish also. (Lakehouse) I will consider your paint color suggestions thanks!

The shingles should be stained, not painted. B.M. or S.W. can make a stain formula for that.

Get more info on how to change the brick color. I've read staining is better than painting.

If you paint, us B.M. soft gloss finish. I don't know much about S W because I don't use it.

Right now when it rains your brick gets wet and then dries out because the brick and the mortar are porous and 'breathe'. If you paint the brick with acrylic paint it's like putting your house in a condom. When the house gets wet, and they always do. The dampness collects behind the acrylic paint. It cannot escape. The moisture will find a way to get out. It will either pop the paint or migrate into the house over time.

I agree with those urging you not to paint the siding and brick the same uniform color. You can do Gray Mist paint on the siding and then pick a coordinating color with some contrast in a masonry paint.

I think you're talking about LOXON masonry primer/sealer.

LOXON/Duration is not the right strategy for masonry. I encourage everyone involved to ask more questions, get more info. I'm saying don't do it.

Sherwin-Williams has a collection of 100 VinylSafe colors.

• The color codes start with VS.
• No VS specific color collateral besides online and in-store brochure
• The colors are regular SW colors, reformulated and renamed. Store has a cross-reference sheet. So you can use color chips and Color To Go Jugs if you cross-reference.
• VS colors available only in Emerald Exterior Latex Paint, Duration Exterior Latex Coating, Resilience Exterior Latex or SuperPaint Exterior Latex Paint.

Benjamin Moore has 75 vinyl safe colors

• Same names/codes as regular colors
• Available in any of their exterior bases

I am an expert on Light and Solar Reflectance Values with regard to exterior application of color.

Bottom line, I'd never paint an exterior vinyl product darker than its original factory color.

I'd still choose a vinyl safe color, just never a darker vinyl safe color.

Lori A. Sawaya, since the OP mentioned that the primer is specifically for her siding, I'm wondering if she has polymer siding and she's talking about Luxor Polyprop Plastic Primer.

In the first post OP said using color matched Sherwin Williams product, don't see where primer is for siding only.

Custom mixed vinyl safe colors removing the black tint and adding the vinyl safe componets is available at my local store - I have purchased it. Not sure that all locations do so. The Loxon primer specified is the for brick. Thanks everyone.

I would leave the brick alone. Its a nice looking brick, and you have a very nice looking house. Split levels get a bad rap, but, they are my favorite type of house. I would paint the shakes, and put the rest of my money into the landscaping, which you really need.

IMO the brick now is a maintenance free part and painting it with any kind of paint turns it into a high maintemnce item plus IMO painting the brick is the fastest way to devalue the house so if thta is your plan go for it .
