Bookcase and fireplace ideas and suggestions needed
We just moved into this new home with very white walls and lots of open space. I've been trying to figure out how tall to make the built-in bookcases on either side of the fireplace. There are 10 ft ceilings. And deciding whether to paint that entire wall and the cabinetry once it is built.
The house has a Mission-style exterior, but I'm a modernist at heart. So the mantel could easily go away. The entry is just to the right.
I'd like to minimize the TV or hide it totally. And I would like some areas glassed in so I don't need to dust as often. Sofa will be reupholstered in a grey tweed. And the kitty bed will be moved LOL.
Show me your favorite bookcases, fireplace ideas, and paint colors you think will work please. And a shout out to Ikea for this 25-year-old shelving unit that has survived 4 homes. 72" tall for reference.

Comments (34)This is probably way too late, but if not....I was flipping the channels the other night (be so glad when the writer's strike is over) and came upon the last few minutes of HGTV's Color Splash, with that David guy. (He's very talented, but can only take so much of him.) The segment was "Dramatic Den Makeover" - (the number for the episode is HCLRS.304 and it will be aired again on January 28 at 8:30 ET. Comments (13)My husband built new bookcases and cabinets on either side of the fireplace and we got ride of the old entertainment center. All of the sound equipment went into the cabinets and the T.V. was moved downstairs (we hardly ever watch T.V. so we don't miss it in the living room anyway). I love what you have going. It just needs to be completed and filled out some : ) The colors are just gorgeous and make for a wonderful and comforting setting to spend time. Comments (3)I can't see the rest of the layout, but I personally love bookcases with a window seat. What could be better than a cozy nook to curl up and read? Either way you go, definitely take your bookcases all the way up the wall for a real library feel. I don't know if you plan to DIY, but I have an old magazine I've saved. Trust me that's significant since I've moved so many times, not much has survived the purge. Anyway, the December 2004 issue #286 of Workbench magazine had a fantastic article about built-in bookcases. It has great detailed information including window layouts, inside corner. If you must do a built in, then make it look like it's a piece of furniture. See below.

3 months agoYou don't necessarily have to do built-ins. You could look into doing two different things on either side of the fireplace. Perhaps a book shelf and a hutch or a small shelf with a painting above. Here we have some images from our design portfoilo, which we thought might help you with your dilemma.
