Im my own worst enemy when I go to Nurseries!!!
Comments (17)I do the same. Today I was suppose to be mowing the seven acres I didn't get done yesterday, but decided to put it off until later so it would be out of the hottest part of the day. Took off for the nearest town and just happened to stop at the tiny nursery where I picked up the Purple Cherokee plants about a month ago. Needed some cabbage and brussel sprouts. Well, the German Johnsons that I missed during the last trip there and a poor Mr. Stripey that had been marked down to a dollar because it was pretty darn tall, oh, and a 4 pack of a "Golden" something tomato caught my eye. When I went in to pay, the lady said the guy was going to mark down things on Thurs. and I commented that I came a day too early. She said he was just going to mark down the flowers and I told her he'd have to do the veggies soon because they were starting to look a little rough. Right thing to say? She told me she'd mark down the ones I bought today. Tomatoes, and cabbage .25 a plant and the brussel sprouts wound up being 6 for a dollar. Like I needed another 10 tomato plants having 25 already. Oh, I just love growing vegetables....See MoreEvans Sour Cherry....be aware, another nursery [Bali twist]
Comments (15)Thank you Chills! No, that's not the Stella branch. >>Konrad, to do that in your climate...You are truly a marvelYou really have to give this credit to our cold winters. Giuseppe, try to contact someone in the US, it's illegal to ship live plant material across. .... .... Not sure why nurseries have to lie.. I have e- mailed a nursery in the US about the false statement in their website saying: Bali was know in Canada as the Evans Cherry They where nice enough to fix it next day to: is know in Canada as Evans... Also they where saying.. > That probably wasn't the biggest lie on our website. Let me know if > you find others I also asked about the Evans they sell, grafted or on their own root? Reply: Where the heck do you get them on their own root??? We are also Zone 3, and our Bali, which we get from Bailey Nurseries in St. Paul, are grafted onto Mazzard Cherry rootstock, which is commonly listed as Zone 5. It is telling, I think, that I've never seen or heard of a plain old Mazzard Cherry growing as a tree in this area. And indeed I've heard reports of them dying over winter. I told them that I bought about a 100 trees 15 years ago from DNA. And that I would plant the grafted ones below the graft for zone 3, they thought it was a good idea. Comments (7)It depends on the the type of nursery. For a retail nursery or garden center, laag's advice is excellent. It is a retail business first and foremost, and the product you sell is quite incidental to the operation. Many of the most successful owners of retail nurseries that I know have very little experience with plants personally - they are business people and are involved primarily with the functions of running a business profitably and marketing that business. Most hire "plant people" to buy, display, tend and sell the product. If you are interested in a growing operation or a nursery that propagates, grows on and sells plants, generally wholesale, to other retail nurseries, then you may want to have a more in-depth horticultural background. The focus is entirely different. And there are hybrids that blend both types together as well. Either way, working at both types of nurseries summers while you are attending school will certainly increase your understanding and give you a better feel of what may be the best fit for your interests and ambition....See MoreBeing Your Own Huckleberry
