slow gardening in July...
Comments (39)Hi The Tradition I have been so busy today after I found a lost dog when I was walking on the trail this morning, she looked tired and sick. After she rested all day and we put posters on the trail and the internet for the owners to find her, we called the animal services so she can get the medical attention that she needs. Now about the Brogdon I got it in a nursery by my house called My Kids Tropicals, I got it in a 5 gallon pot, the largest one that they had and I don't remember what time of the year I planted but it was probably after we moved here around spring time. The first 2 years we did protect it from frost, after that never because it is big enough and like you said we have a nice microclimate with the 2 lakes around, my neighbors were telling me that last week they saw a 6 foot alligator hiding in the bamboo at a nearby house. The tree is very healthy and never needed any spray for bugs or disease. Hi Morningloree, very nice! Silvia...See MoreSo you eat sorrel?
Comments (12)gooster, that was a fascinating episode. ! I met Daniel and his wife last spring. Lovely, friendly and full of life just as i expected. (did not know about his childhood). I do grow sorrel. And many other greens and things in small amounts. Some intended, some hitchhikers. Some i should not like but accept...(the horseradish) Sorrel?...i think in small quantities it can be an anti-inflamatory and healthy. (I have inherited joint issues). I use sorrel as more of a finishing garnish, a few young leaves in a base for fish or chicken. A last minute addition to a sauce. As in the classic made in Bourdain's recent episode. Salmon with sorrel sauce. Something i'm not sure of, in larger quantities, like a pesto, i avoid. Just try to balance out the meal with a salad and dressing that includes a contrasting herb. Mustard, fresh ginger, turmeric, lots of lemon and citrus....See MoreDo you like celery? do you grow celery?
Comments (8)I use celery very often, if I want to plant, the quick way is to buy celery with the roots at the oriental market, you can also root regular celery cutting the bottom and root it in water or soil. I make the best celery salad, I use the whole bunch of celery thinly sliced, green peppers, thinly sliced onions, meyer lemon sections, parsley and cilantro. With or without feta and egg. Comments (9)Thanks everyone for your advice! I went to the library yesterday and found a fairly good book on Mesembs/Succulents indicating where certain species live, when they get rainfall/fog and how much. The major difference is their growing season- summer or winter. The other thing is growers in CA are growing their lithops completely different than growers in the UK/N Europe (for obvious reasons). My understanding is that growers in CA can mimic their natural growing environment, due to fantastic light year round and fairly warm temps. With the UK/N. European growers many seem to push for winter dormancy regardless due to cooler temps and lack of light. There is no clear cut answer, which complicates it further :/. Will have to spend a bit more time doing research on the types Im interested in growing and seeing how I can get them to do well in my environment....See Moreruth_mi
