Drapes: Would clip rings look better here?
Comments (16)Oh, this is so timely - I'm going through the same debate and am 90% sold on going to rings. But for practical reasons - I use extension rods and my panels get caught up on the spot where little rod goes into big rod. And the rods are 9' up... and I'm only 5'10... so all I can do is stand there and yank until it comes clear. Good thing we used the anchors when we installed the rods! But I LOVE the look of rings. And I think they would be absolutely charming in your space... but maybe not "clip" rings. I'd take the time to attach them, if you had some fabric scraps or something (if you needed to hem the length the accomodate the rings, you night get scraps that way), or could sew them in (think this was mentioned above). There's something a little "messy" and something a little "cheap" about seeing the clips themselves that I never care can quite get over, and your space is so lovely and warm... I just don't see the clippies. I'm also going to echo something noted above. If you go to rings, you won't get that nice (sash? swag? pullback?) look to your curtains unless you really work for it, or somehow block the rings - but then you lose the great functionality. I tried to keep that look on DH's WTs, also on rings, and gave up. Now I usually just let her panels hang straight down, covering up the adorable holdbacks I labored on for 2 weekends....See MoreClips on curtain rods for tartan plaid curtains...
Comments (17)3apples - Are you purchasing your fabric from one of the Scottish mills or are you able to find your tartan through a regular fabric source? Some of the more common ones (like royal Stewart) are available in different fabrics. If you're purchasing your wool from one of the Scottish mills the clan tartans come in different weights and a few come in three: 11 oz, 13 oz and 17 oz.. It might help to consider the overall weight of the finished panel and the lining when deciding how to hang them. There is a real skill in sewing tartan -not just to get the pleats correct and to make sure they hang properly but how the fabric is folded has an impact on how the finished plaid looks. A good workroom should be able to advise you. I purchased my tartan in silk and had a waistcoat made for my son to wear beneath his tux jacket when he married and his attendants had matching silk ties. Silk might not be the look you want but the fabric is beautiful. The woodwork in your library is beautiful and I hope you post finished photos....See MoreSuggestions for kids room curtain panels
Comments (8)I think of mildew as being more pinkish like what sometimes forms on our shower grout but is easy to clean up. I also think of smelly damp clothes as having mildewed from, say, having been left in the washing machine too long. But mold, I think of as being black or very dark greenish and also having a yucky musty odor. When we moved into our house many years ago, we had to clean a small area of mold that grew beneath wallpaper underneath a window and went all the way into the drywall and studs. We read on the internet the precautions that should be taken so that the mold spores don't get spread throughout the house as you remove it. It can be really scary to read about mold on the internet, I'll warn you! We did some things wrong having read about it too late. For instance, we bagged the wallpaper and drywall trash and carried it through the house and out the door to dispose of it rather than throw it out the window. That could have caused spores to spread througout the house potentially causing more problems than we started with. We haven't had any resulting problems to date, though. We had to treat all surfaces in the bathroom, and had to sand and bleach the studs because we could see and smell mold on them. We also read about borax being a safer way to treat mold than bleach, and it can also prevent mold growth, so we treated with borax as well. I wouldn't know how to treat carpet, but I would research it online first so you don't make the situation worse by either spreading the mold, or causing more to grow by wetting the carpet during cleanup. You might try calling the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)and ask them how to handle it. They advised us how to clean up the mold we found and gave us guidelines for when it could be cleaned up by the homeowner vs. a mold remediation company. (Ours was a small enough area that they said we could treat it ourselves). I found this number for EPA directory assistance on their site: (202) 272-0167. Good luck to you and your daughter. Comments (16)Parma, are you looking for wood or metal rings? I just bought wood rings w/ the eyelets and no clips at Lowes. They also have some at Penneys (Kirsch brand, not on the JCP website). Also at Penneys, most of their fancier rings (Chris Madden, etc) have removable clips. I couldn't see that on the website, but I looked at them in the store and saw that. ctlane, on the packs of the clip rings, they usually tell you aobut how far apart to place the clips. Also, the info in the drapes themselves (if you buy premade ones) may tell you how many to use....See Morelavender12145
