Can you please post a to scale floor plan of the space? Measure all walls, windows, doorways etc. Where is this room in relation to other spaces in your home? What is the purpose for the room? A library room with the focus on the fireplace or are you also including a TV? If so, where will your TV go and what will your furniture arrangement be? I realize this has nothing to do with your question about paint but understanding your overall space really helps.

as a personal observation only, I would paint out the trim white, or if painting the ceiling and walls a shade of White, paint the ceiling, walls and all the trim the same shade of white.

the center beam could be painted to disapear into the ceiling.

The ceiling fan, if necessary should not have a light kit (especially exposed bulbs)

The beams could have LED light tape strips to light the ceiling with a soft glow.

I would change out the wall sconces to Up/down lighting (no exposed bulbs)

Paint the beams a brown tone... you said they had paint spattered on them, I think the beams are a great feature to the room, a solid stain/paint in a Mahogany tone.

if the floor is in great shape, leave it and get a large area rug. Ruggable.com or rugs.com have great affordable rugs to ground the space and add interest.

on a Black window note... I have black interior windows and they are the first spot to show dust.

Although they look nice, and draw your eye to the outdoors, they are a pain to keep dusted.

Sorry for the ramblings... the bookcase is pretty as is the chandelier during the day,, but think about bare bulbs glowing at night...

Oh I’d love to post a to scale floor plan but I have no idea how to make one! It is going to be utilized as a library/tv room with a Samsung frame tv hung over the fireplace. The room is at the front of the home and is mostly not visible except through the entry foyer from the other living areas. The room is about 22.5 feet by 16 feet.

In terms of furniture arrangement still thinking about it but probably a sofa with some chairs or ottomans near the bookcases/fireplace and tv and maybe a small chess table in the corner. Will have to flesh out what other furniture the room needs as we go.

I should mention this is a second home for us and we only recently purchased. Plus we are planning quite an extensive renovation so we don’t have much experience actually living in the space.

As far as the exposed bulbs I honestly don’t mind as the the lights will all be on dimmers.

This wall will be where the fireplace, bookcases and tv will go. Also visible the entryway and front door and beyond the dining room/family room which will be opened to the kitchen. The closets in the entryway are being torn out and replaced with some built in cabinets and a bench for coat and shoe storage. This is a country home and the closets are too shallow to be functional and they close off that space too much.

Surely in a room 22 x 16 you could find another space for the tv than above the fireplace.

Could you make two furniture groupings - one around the fireplace (with bookcases and more of a library feel) and the other around the tv?

Get a piece of 1/4" graph paper, then measure the walls. Use 1 square = 1 foot on the paper. Put the windows and doors

Not putting the tv above the fireplace is really not a priority in this room. There is another room with a wood burning fireplace which will just have a mirror above the fireplace. The walls are mostly windows so no there is not another wall where the tv could easily go. The only other option would be directly across from the fireplace wall which would look odd in my opinion. It is a Samsung frame so it will look like art with some decor below it on the mantle. The frame will be an antique gold or brass frame. The effect will be similar to below but different styling.

I love Lyn Nielson’s suggestion to paint the center beam to match the ceiling.

If you are doing more renovations then I would hold off painting until you have a full cohesive plan as the paint will go through to all other spaces (correct?) If you are putting an electric fireplace and TV in this room then what is your family room going to be used for??? If the family room is off of the kitchen and dining spaces where you will spend the majority of your time, wouldn’t it make more sense to put the TV in there? If you just bought the home and haven’t spent a lot of time in it yet, I would hold off doing anything until you get a feel for it and how you use the home as a whole. Is this a 2nd home for a big family? How many people will be vacationing at one time? A floor plan will really help you to visualize the whole space and how best to use the rooms.

Unfortunately I can’t hold off as renovations begin this week. This room will be worked on first as it requires the most painting and the floors to be replaced. Then it will be sealed off when demo begins of the wall and kitchen while we wait for cabinets to arrive.

We are a family of 5 but will also frequently have a few other relatives staying with us. My mother is our nanny so she will often be joining us. I do have an idea of how we will use the spaces generally and of course we have lived in other spaces to know what typically works for our family.

So with that said what I am calling the “family room” is really a smaller sitting area adjacent to the wood burning fireplace. We are removing a wall between a very large kitchen with a breakfast nook and a formal dining room and creating that sitting area and orienting the long table perpendicular to where a dining table would currently sit. We do not gather as a family around the tv and while I understand this works for other families we really hate being able to see a tv from our dining area and kitchen. The fireplace is also too large to mount a tv above it. You would have to crane your neck uncomfortably.

Very much messed up the scale but this is generally how the other room will function.

Thanks for the additional info, I have a better understanding of what you are trying to accomplish! I still think you should wait to pick a paint colour until the reno is complete as your new floors will impact the light. You’ll also need to paint samples on large format boards to place them in different areas to see how the paint colour works at different times of day etc. For the front vaulted room, I agree with painting the beam at the peak the same colour as your walls to make that disappear and then keep the other beams in wood. For the windows, I would paint them the same colour as your walls and pick window treatments that will work with the other rooms. The wood blinds are fine but I think you have enough wood tones already so I would do a linen shade or something with texture & lighter tone, especially with lighter oak floors. For the TV/Fireplace if the room is 16 x 22, I would suggest creating 2 seating areas and have two chairs in front of the fire with bookcases on either side and put your TV on the opposite wall between the windows where those two scones are currently. Large sofa facing the TV with 2 chairs on either side would give you ample seating for your family on the rare occasions you have a rainy day movie night & 2 chairs flanking the fireplace will be a cozy spot for reading. What a great space for you and your family to enjoy! Keep us posted with updated pictures!
