painted a 28 foot wall in Edgecomb in the living room. It is a lot darker on the north end and does not look clean on the south end.

The sofa color, if it's staying, should be considered in terms of a hue family relationship with the walls.

Also, adjacent walls being a different color could be influencing how Edgecomb shows up. A lot happens to color appearance when a color reflects upon itself. Right now, that's missing.

1. Different hue family than where you've been. In general, the colors tried so far are in the same, rather tight, hue range.

Thanks Lori. It makes sense that maybe the adjacent walls which are all Shaker Beige might be one of the issues. Also the couch is brown tweed but against the Edgecomb it seem reddish and the Edgecomb walls looks greenish and dirty. Maybe there is a lighter off white beige or greige colour that would go better with the Shaker Beige adjacent walls with higher chroma that would be cleaner that you could suggest.

That wall was an accent wall in Alexandria Beige so wanted to go lighter than Shaker Beige and the side walls will also be painted. Shaker Beige is across and down the halls and foyer which has to stay for now. I did like Maritime White which seemed to be cleaner and lighter with an LRV of 73.2 but there is only one degree in hue away from Edgecomb and same chroma so worried it might react the same. I did go through your list and if there is an off white beige/greige colour with a bit higher LRV in that hue family you could suggest in Benjamin Moore as we do not have Sherwin Williams then I could pick up a few samples. I am wondering if the chroma also has to be increased to be cleaner or if changing the hue will be enough. Thank you so much for helping me.

Like Edgecomb, both Maritime and Pale Oak are closer to the green end of the yellow hue family. Often when people mention clean/dirty colors, they are referring to rhe chroma. That being said, I would check out these colors. If they are feeling a tad too colorful, then Elmira White might appeal to you.

IMO there is all the info in the world but the only way to find the perfect color in a space is to test it in the space . I happen to not think those colors are neutral in fack all have distinct undertones thT I think are hard to work with. I use this clor alot for homes where it is imperative to choose wall color before all things are in. I usually cut it 25% and IMO nature has figured out neutral and it always has a bit of a green cast .I also use LED 4000K lighting since thta mimics bright daylight so colors stay true

I agree -- you *have* to test the color in your own space. Notations and chips and recommendations can be helpful as a start, but colors can look completely different in different spaces. Pale Oak pulls purple on me, Healing Aloe made my walls look like Prison Cell Block H, and I posted elsewhere about the wackiness that is Edgecomb Gray.

White Sand is only one degree difference in hue but has more chroma so would it be better to choose Muslin or Elmira which is closer to the red to get rid of the green and both have more chroma but would either enhance the redness in the couch? Also Edgecomb's LRV was 63 and it was quite dark so would an LRV of 65 or 66 make it a lot lighter or do I need something much higher in LRV? Just wanted to clarify before I get the samples and thank you all so much.

It is my opinion that the redness in a color wouldn’t enhance the redness in the couch, the greenness of a color would; because they are opposite/complimentary.

If edgecomb is feeling too green, dirty and dark; I think you’d want to look for colors under 90° with higher chroma and a higher lrv. a lower chroma color can feel darker.

I personally like a minimum of at least a 10 point difference in lrv between my ceiling and walls, so if it were me; I would be considering colors with lrv between 75-63, hue 87-90° and chroma 1.1-1.5. I realized this was my sweetspot when I was selecting colors for my own home, yours may be different but our goals were similar as I had warm fixed elements that wouldn’t tolerate colors that were too green or too low chroma.

No matter what the data says, you do need to see the colors in your space. So once you’ve narrowed it down, I’d be sure to grab some sampilize sheets.

When I was choosing a color for our very open main space many years ago, I had a similar problem...everything seemed to show a green cast. I love green, but this was sickly.

Finally ended up with BM seapearl. I love it. Perfect in out space. It's been 12 years and a lot of areas need to be redone and I am sticking with the seapearl.

At the end it was down to Dove Wing and Seapearl, but the Seapearl seemed to read cleaner.

Did a bathroom in Etiquette, also BM. Very neutral.

Agree that research is good to narrow down options, but then you must try samples in your space, and do everything possible to get an idea of the color without it being affected by surrounding colors that aren't staying.

Everything you add to your space is going to have an effect on the colors in the space. Don't get off track studying the science part of this. It's an artistic effort to make it work.

The only question to ask here is what color goes with Shaker Beige to function as an accent wall.

The contents are totally irrelevant because of the proximity to the 3 existing Shake Beige walls.

Or am I missing something?

@Lori Sawaya I was under the impression he painted one wall and then stopped because he didn’t like the color, but that all the walls will eventually be painted. @Brian Dowdall can you clarify??

I no longer wanted the accent wall and would like all the walls in the living room the same colour but Edgecomb does not work. There are other walls that still have Shaker Beige but they are not in the living room but down the hall and foyer and are staying for now. Hope that helps.

I did try Elmira but it was too dark and seemed a bit reddish and White Sand was nice but a bit too gray and a bit too dark. I liked the lightness of Maritime White so am going to try Benjamin Moore Indian White and Sailcloth which are lighter and hopefully one of these will work better but not sue of the chroma.

I’m surprised White Sand was too gray, because it has more chroma than Maritime, but maybe it was the depth. I would check out Bone White/Natural Wicker (it goes by 2 names). I could see Indian White being a contender, I wonder if Sail Cloth will come across green in your space but won’t know till you try.

I have Maritime White in my hall and love it. The paint store guy mixing it stopped in the middle and said "this is a really nice color", lol.

I like Maritime. I think you could compare it next to Bone White and Indian White if you still aren’t sure.

Sorry for the delay. I finally painted one of the side walls in White Sand yesterday as I had a couple of sample pots and it is not as dark as the sample when it is actually on the wall. It seemed to take out some of the green of the Edgecomb but still is too dark. After White Sand was on the wall I wanted to see how it compared to Maritime White so I painted a sample on top of the White Sand which may skew the colour some but they seem very similar other than Maritime White is lighter and maybe a bit more beige. I may be leaning towards Maritime White for the 28 foot wall as Edgecomb showed so much darker on that wall. Not the greatest pic but if you have any thoughts that would be great.

Yep, Maritime is slightly lighter and less chromatic than White Sand. If it’s feeling too dark, have you considered just using Cloud White on the walls? Not sure if you’d see green since the hue angle is 102°.

I do not find White Sand dark at all on that side wall and was just worried that since Edgecomb went so dark on that long 28 foot wall that White Sand would do the same so thought maybe Maritime White which is lighter would be better but you are right that it is definitely not as colourful and seems more muted. Cloud White is my baseboard and ceiling colour and want to have some contrast with the walls and fear it might go green. I think I will have to do samples on the long wall so I can see what the colours do when they are on the wall then make the decision but really appreciate your help. Thank you.
