How to reuse 50's indoor planter and bamboo rods??

Our rental has this built in planter and bamboo rods. Any ideas on how to modernize it or turn it into a more functional space? If we weren't renting, we would just demolish it...

What are in the cabinet because if it is for a kitchen I would put up hooks like these below from Amazon

Ask your landlord to fill in the planter hole with a board painted to match the existing wood. Or buy a sack of Mexican beach pebbles (about 2" in diameter) and fill it up.

Thanks! The flat pine boards around the frame are actually about 1/4" to the right of the vertical inside boards, and then painted, so you can see that inside seam, and if I were to put even panelling nails in, they'd show. :( BUT...I might be able to get away with pounding in some straight-pins, which I've used to hang small pictures & accessories at home, so would imagine that they'd hold a bit of fishing line tied to them on the outside edge. (Pounded into the seam where it meets the sheetrock). I may also be able to use push-pins...you know...put up some memos that I never read as though they are reference materials...hehe BUT...I think I can definitely work with the jam-fit rod(s) and some fishing line! I could put one vertical, and one horizontal, and make a 'grid' with the fishing line so the plant covers a portion of the upper-corner of the window. The mini-blind is mounted RIGHT AGAINST THE WINDOW, so putting behind is also not an option >:( Thank you SO much for the ideas! I knew I could count on this group!

What have you done with Bamboo canes?

Barb, we do have several varieties of bamboo growing, but the projects made with the BIG stuff (the canisters, for instance) were made some years ago with bamboo Mark found growing in a wild area. There are quite a few varieties which will get that big around (or more) over time. One of the ones we ARE growing has new canes at least 3" thick already. It's clumping bamboo, though, and whenever any canes grow out a bit too far, I just cut 'em off. I have designated an area for it, and I don't plan to let it get wider than that area. Running bamboo, we mostly grow in containers. It's my favorite, actually, because I love the leaves all the way to the ground. But I don't want it popping up 20 feet away from where I planted it, so it stays in pots. We have some Buddha's Belly, too, but the one we have doesn't get real thick. It DOES make beautiful, sculptural looking canes (kinda short, so far) that look good as decorative stakes in potted plants. Marcia

The squirrels and I get along, but only because they stay outside. Probably helps that I live in a milder climate and have two large dogs. As long as they stay out of the house, we will probably be okay. Rats and mice and I do not -- but especially since they want to come inside. The house next door had a rat infestation -- we think for a couple of years, and the prior owners did nothing. The offspring started looking at our house. We think the problem is under control now -- after another neighbor's orange kitty routinely longed in our flower bed, a hawk sitting on our fence looking fat and happy, the dog catching a couple, putting wire mesh at the bottom of our garage door opening, cement board siding, a rat zapper catching 7 or 8 near our trash cans, the house next door sold due to a divorce and a young couple with two little girls bought it -- showing no mercy on the freeloaders. We still get possums, skunks, raccoons and the squirrels. As long as they stay outdoors, I can probably live with them. I've actually had one or more who amuse me. One year, I had an acorn in the corner of each window across the front of my porch, they leave them in the openings of my filigree doormat and every year, I find I few in each planter beside me door -- but in 10 years here, they never dig those up. They just leave presents by the door. If they get in my house, they will be reminded why will have gotten along so far.

The yard does not have to look like a recycle salvage- the cheap/recycled pots can be camouflaged with the much nicer wood planters just like garden nursery pots. In the case of using the square storage bins or kitty litter buckets, they fit/fill a bit nicer into a square wooden box surround than round pots can. Garbage cans don't have to look garbage either- there are attractive ones out there. Or at least ones that more decorative or meant to be seen and look like pots and don't necessarily need to be hidden. They can also be handy for container growing stuff with deep roots. I container grow horseradish and salsify, and just couldn't find any pots that were big and deep enough till I found a nice trio of plain round heavy plastic garbage cans- they look a lot like the big pot on the left in the OP pic, only they came in black.

Since live plants are pretty popular again, I'd get a few real ones, leave them in the pots and put them in the planter box. I think a variety of succulents would look good, and fill in the blank spots with the beach pebbles, as above. I don't mind the bamboo rods, which is good, because I have no thrilling idea for what to do with them!

What’s in the open space on the right angle side with the upper cabs? It looks open but can’t tell if it is or if open all the way through. What do you use the storage space for & is this a formal dining room or open to other spaces? The hanging light looks formal & can see it’s open to another room - LR?

it’s not open. it’s a piece of glass. the storage space is for dishes. it’s open to the living room

Ok thanks for info. That gives me a better visual. I would fill it with nice quality fake plants. Not a whole bunch of foliage & garland stuff but plants in pots. The depth / width doesn’t look like much so smaller pots.. If you want real plants then I’d go for a collection of Sansevieria - varied heights & leaf colors & patterns. Matching pots black or white. These are low light tolerant & low water needs. Here’s a Wayfair link to some of the fake ones for what they look like

Ask the landlord if you can remove the bamboo rods. Place a piece of stone, glass or wood on top.
