Japanese Beetles have arrived

Checking some of my plants yesterday and saw several Japanese Beetles. Got some beetle bags and will set those up today. This morning I saw a lot of them on our crape myrtle tree. Many of the leaves were eaten and look like swiss cheese. Killed most of them and then decided to spray some neem oil on the tree. Not sure if it will help but worth trying. Not only battling the deer and rabbits but now the JB's as well. Did another round of Bobbex around the flower beds as well this morning.

Anyone else seeing them?

I saw my 1st one today. I have not been having many the last few years. Moles have some use I think. Not seen as many mole tunnels this year, so we will see.

I saw them a couple of weeks ago, but they were on a rose and I haven't seen any since. I think the birds around here have decided they are good food.

IMRED- They are new up here, within just the past few years i've seen the first ones. I laid MS last summer. I hope to never see one again. I think winter plays a big role in what happens the following summer, along with moisture. We need to get rid of these things or at least suppress them. I say import every known predator from Japan and lay MS by the square mile :) I read some research out of Colorado of a town that pretty much got rid of them using several methods. Mass trapping, grub killer on almost every lawn...the numbers steadily dropped to almost zero. As of 2008 all they found were a few males.

since they are japanese.. one might holler CARP!!!! ken ... who sits outside every night for 3 to 4 hours.. reading.. perhaps it smells better out here in the country.. as compared the the asphalt jungle... excepts its sometimes hard to concentrate on the book with the din of those freakin country birds ... so i light an M80.. and than am so deafened.. the birds dont bother me ...

Oh no.....if they just arrived in southern VT that means they will be here any day now. And I was just telling my husband that I wonder if the JB's were killed off by the severe drought we had since I hadn't seen any yet and they are always here on the 4th of July. I guess it was too much of a miracle to ask for. We always have them by the hundreds and my yard is like a giant smorgasbord with all my botanical selections for their dining pleasure. They will probably stop here and not go any further north since there is so much to eat.....so Edward up in Nova Scotia probably is safe....LOL

CaWill: This is the best you can hope for is that a neighbor sets out traps that attract them away from your floriculture. I was traveling today, and came across a home 70 miles away with a yard full of roses; front yard and back. Not much lawn to mow. So, I stopped as the owner was outside. He has no discernible JB damage. He uses a one gallon sprayer squirts Dawn dish soap in to make the water blue, and sometimes a little bit of Sevin, and sprays three times per day. My Bayer Shrub and Tree Protect was not entirely useless: But the Bayer products are not nearly as helpful if you have a pervasive infestation such as mine:. My conclusion is that Bayer soil drench is one tool in the bag, that can help when your JB issues are less extensive than mine. Upon arriving home I tried the Dawn dish soap spray, but instead of Sevin I had Malathion in my inventory. I actually used very little Malathion. While Malathion seemed to have lost its effectiveness on JBs when I sprayed it with my weekly fungicide spray, combined with the Dawn dish soap and sprayed it was very effective. The above JBs and many others chewing up my rose bed are deceased.

I’d never really noticed them that much before but they seem to be the prominent pest here this year. They decimated the roses we have and have now moved on to other plants. Got a trap ordered from Amazon and it can’t get here soon enough. 7b

I have them too, Julia. Probably worse than previous years. They are on my shrub roses which they have never attacked. I even saw one on one of my daylilies yesterday. Now I carry the cup of soapy water when I walk the gardens. Yuck!

They are late here this year. Some usually start showing up the last week of May when the first daylilies bloom. This year I hadn't seen one until three days ago. It was on a daylily. I haven't seen any since, but I've noticed some damage on blooms that looks like their work.
