What a lousy thing to have happen. They say that there are now a few in Tulsa, but so far I haven't ever seen any and I hope never to. I would think it would be especially disheartening for daylilies since they can't be counted on to rebloom if the first crop is damaged. You have my sympathy..........Maryl

We usually have a few but never a real problem. They mostly eat the red raspberry leaves which doesn't bother the plants at all.

They were in my pool's skimmer basket today. Here we go....yet another garden chore...

I've seen a few, but not many. Once the Rose of Sharon bushes start flowering, they eat those instead of daylilies.

Last year and this year I saw no more than two or three. I have to assume that the bird that are all over my yard have recognized them as food, because we used to have hundreds of the ugly little monsters and they would shred the roses and other plants. I have heard people say chickens love them. I have an overabundance of Brown Thrashers and Mockingbirds. I give them credit for the demise of the beetles. Julia, I would fill a bucket with soapy water and knock them in it. a cup wouldn't begin to hold the little monsters.

The Japanese beetles and earwigs are worse this season for me. I see damage on my blooms every day, some days are worse than others. It makes me wish for a cold, snowy winter, parish the thought : (

I have been seeing a few, but not too bad. We had several really bad years for them, then the last 3 years-not so bad. I haven't questioned, just thankful. I have wondered if one of the neighbors put out beetle traps. We did one year, and they work, but attract every beetle in the neighborhood.

They just arrived here in southern VT, I saw them this morning on the raspberry bushes.

They just showed up yesterday. They don't seem to bother the daylilies, but they do like my Basil plant.

Oh no.....if they just arrived in southern VT that means they will be here any day now. And I was just telling my husband that I wonder if the JB's were killed off by the severe drought we had since I hadn't seen any yet and they are always here on the 4th of July. I guess it was too much of a miracle to ask for. We always have them by the hundreds and my yard is like a giant smorgasbord with all my botanical selections for their dining pleasure. They will probably stop here and not go any further north since there is so much to eat.....so Edward up in Nova Scotia probably is safe....LOL

I meant Signet, that if the Japanese Beetles eat the buds and blooms off a daylily the daylily may not produce new buds or blooms for the rest of the season. Of course it doesn't have to be Japanese Beetles. If anything destroys the buds or blooms on a daylily, it may not form new scapes to produce new buds/ blooms. I have plenty of daylilies that only produce one group of buds and blooms per year. If they are all gone there is no more that year. Can't think how else to clarify my initial response for you........Maryl

I just noticed the first ones of the year here yesterday - on Forever Redeemed and then noticed one on a coneflower. Usually they don't bother my daylilies, mostly just the echinacea... I hope having them on the daylilies isn't a problem this year!

knock on wood they have not made it here yet ever. I hope it stays that way!

Well I guess I'm not alone in having the beetles here.

I have daylilies in my raised beds next to the raspberry bushes which are covered in the beatles. They don't seem to be bother the DL. I also saw them munching on zinnias in another daylily bed, but they seem to be avoiding the daylilies.

We have had Japanese beetles for years in west central Indiana. When we grew roses, they were especially nasty as they would consume a whole flower. Over all, they seem to have died down here. (I guess some of them must have decided to move on to other states--greener pastures, so to speak.) But they are worse this summer than they were last year, probably due to the mild winter we had. They don't seem to bother our daylilies, but we have plenty of other things they like to eat--rose of sharon, cherry tree leaves, roses, etc.

I am in Kansas City, and they are here. Here last year, and I used the bag traps. This year I just don't have the whatever to chase them down. Have been eating on EVERYTHING except evergreens. Tons of them. The only thing I know of to help is put grub control down on lawn for next years crop. I am about ready to pull out all the roses, as they look terrible.
