Building a Home Design Dilemma

Mixing or matching siding on new detached garage

Our home has a board and batten finish now, and is not standard or easy to match - the battens were custom milled 60 years ago and much ”chunkier” than what I see today on other houses.

We are planning to build a new garage that will be detached (or maybe attached with a roof breezeway), and I think matching the siding exactly would be costly. It is a pretty traditional ranch home, nothing architecturally significant. Could we get away with doing horizontal siding of some sort on the garage rather than either trying to match or having a different looking b&b, so long as the color and finishes were all consistent?

I agree, make the garage siding the same as the colour of house (redish bricks) and use white trims, soffit and eaves trough for accents. Garage door colours would look nice with white. Hi, It's hard to suggest a color for different parts of the country. The colors where I live wouldn't go well with all the green. The red is a good contrast but may make the garage look like a barn. Take a ride around your neighborhood and it you see something you like and simply copy it. Good Luck Woodbutcher

What color garage door to match new roof?

You have a nice home. I like the new roof. Paint your garage door the same color as the siding so it blends. Don't paint it white. Do you have shutters next to your front door? If so, remove them they don't belong there. Or, are there sidelights next to the front door? It is hard to tell from this pic. Replace your front door with a door that doesn't have that distinctive Victorian glass oval in the door. If you can't do it right away, keep it on your list for the near future when you are able to replace the door. Go with a door with no windows, something like the door below (but a different color). The first one is more contemporary, the second more colonial. Black doors recede a bit. A color will accent the front door. The trick is finding one that works well with your brick. It is possible and done all the time :) JMO

House and garage do not have to match, but they should appear to be from the same family and have a family resemblance. They should not be visually strongly different and each fighting for dominance. Similar siding and color is often a good idea. Windows for a garage are always a good idea, allowing natural light in the garage and making the lawn mower much easier to find. Why do you think a hip roof would look weird? It would probably be better related to your house than a hip or shed roof...but we haven't seen the rear of your house.

You are right a bit different than what is the style now but IMO for a small area I would try to match it. I also suggest you get rid of those shutter they do not belong on those windows I assume you are painting the old siding so yes to making the addition the same color for sure even if you do not match the old siding.As for not signifigant architexture this is a aMCM ranch and IMO very much signifigant . I ahppen to love MCM ranches and they can be awesome in style so make sure that garge is the same style .Can i aslo see the new windows please . Just post here inanother comment do not start another post.

I would definitely use a clapboard and mix it up, but I would remove some of the original siding and use/replace it with whatever new you use in another area to tie it all together... like in the inset areas. It is a very long profile, changing up the siding and even the color would add real interest. Looks like a fun project, good luck!

It may not be as costly as you think to duplicate what you have. I saw some 2x3's for sale at the big box building supply store and wondered what those would be used for. Now I know.
