How much should I spend on a new house?
Comments (21)Great thread. It's interesting what you said about the newer development. It sounds like you would be living in their home. I wouldn't want to have to go with their colors and styles. I have a tiny cottage built in 1943. I recently tried to sell it, but ended up keeping it. I love antiques and have this one decorated in the style of the period. Right now I'm having the bathroom remodeled. I found some 1930's pink tile the I just love! Next year I will do the floor in white tile with a pink border. It's really fun to put your artistic stamp on your home. I have several brass antique lamps that add so much ambiance. I would look at all of the older homes anyway. It can't hurt. Prices are great right now. I would also consider paying off your home completely and doing a small remodel each year. That's what I'm doing. It's very rewarding. Last year I bought a 1950's O'Keefe and Merritt stove and restored it. The year before I replaced the carpet with my favorite shade of green. Then I painted. Now it's the bathroom. Even though my house is old, I love the charm, and it feels so solid to me. Next year I'll repipe. I would definitely make sure you sell the first house before buying the second. Real estate offers can be iffy. People do back out. I learned that the hard way......See MoreCan the detached garage roof be a different ratio from house?
Comments (5)With historical data showing that the original roof was at the 6:12 pitch I would go back with what was there originally. Not only do you take it back to original, you also stated that you will have a better view out of the kitchen window. Looking at the picture the two roofs look fine, especially since your garage is a single story and the house is two story. My vote is 6:12. Is the house in an historical district? If so, it might require you to go back with the 6:12, especially as there are pictures showing this....See MoreWhat should be in trench between house and garage/studio ?
Comments (12)Forget the conduit and go for a tunnel. We actually looked in to that. We get 10'x culverts buried for walk & bike tunnels (amazing how many more kids walk/bike to school when the dangerous crossing in front is eliminated) and it's not that expensive. We can get 8' sections of 6'x5' fairly cheap but by the time it was integrated in to the basement, stairs added on the garage end, moderately waterproofed, sealed and fie/weather doors added we were looking at about $40k. And realistically, even in winter, I'd probably often think it easier to put on a coat (or put up with the cold) and walk straight across rather than go down to the tunnel. Our builder did do a house on another nearby lake that has a basement 24' above water level. They have an elevator that goes down about 20' and then a culvert tunnel out to their dock. They apparently didn't want a rail style wheelchair lift like we're planning for (in the far distant future)....See MoreAdding a garage to house - detached, attached or none?
Comments (14)celerygirl did a nice mockup. you could also turn it so the doors are at 3 o'clock i'm guessing you'll want a double car? maybe you can get an additional room over the garage too. your house is perfect for the garage add-on that will make it look like it's always been there why don't you have an architect draw up some plans for you? you're going to need them...See MoreFlo Mangan
