Attached or Detached Garage?
Comments (2)We recently moved and our new [to us] house has a two-car attached garage. We find it very convenient, especially on those -40 degree days. I put an overhead unit heater in and we keep it turned down to above freezing and we keep our freezer and extra fridge in the garage, along with the treadmill. Our previous house had a two-car detached garage. It also had an overhead unit heater and we used it in much the same way. One advantage to a detached garage is that if you use it as a shop and have a mishap such as a fire, you don't burn the house down. That is not a consideration for you as you don't plan to use it as a shop. Overall, we like the convenience of attached, especially given our climate....See MoreWe are adding an attached garage to our home.
Comments (20)A door between the garage and house or a door between the garage and outdoors ? Security risks are area specific. I comment on house plans here without ever mentioning the security risks. I live in a high crime country so I notice it as a risk. They're unlikely to be such where they're being built. A door between the garage & house is considered a risk here, though not to the point of it never being done. We've got one, with a gate too. It also stays locked generally, we actually enter from the main door. A door between the garage and outdoors isn't much more of a risk. Rather uncommon here though, and I don't find it necessary at all. if it were done here it would probably have a separate gate too. Which is an option for you if you are in a relatively high crime area and you want the door....See MoreAdding 2nd story to detached garage
Comments (22)Your max is the lowest bottom end potential cost. It will more likely be 30-80% more than that for something average in build quality. Depends on if you are in Kansas City, MO, or Alexandra, VA. That is if the foundation and garage framing can hold up a second floor, and the top plate heights at all line up with the home. And the home's main drain is on the same side of the house. Most likely one of those assumptions is not the case. You might have to tear down the garage and completely start over as a new build. And pay for a new sewer tap. If allowed. If the main drain is in the wrong spot, the project will never be feasible to do....See MoreAdding attached garage and updating exterior
Comments (3)Please make sure the garage doors sit back from the front edge of the house. A walkway from the street to the front door is IMO a must. If by any chance you are replacing windows I would get rid of the arched one for sure.I think some landscaping would help but of course hard to tell with all the snow....See MoreCelery.
