What about Plum? It's complementary to yellow and I think it goes good with the black. A rich Periwinkle Blue would work too, has a touch of Violet in it.

Please replace the potted bushes by the door with something a little less imposing.

Remove the shutters, they're too small anyway. Then maybe the window boxes won't look so odd. Do you really plant up there? Without the shutters & window boxes a Navy door would be beautiful.

Ideally shutters should look like could actually cover the window if they could be closed. These are way too small and placed too far from the window, so it really looks like they are just stuck on decorations. I would remove them if it was my house.

I think the right mid to light blue door could be nice or a pretty blue-green shade. But consider moving flower boxes to first floor and paint same as white trim. I’m drawn to some of these.

It is likely that if you removed the shutters, the siding behind them is going to be a different color due to the difference in sun exposure. And from what I’ve read, the remedy for that seems to be new siding, which is probably not a path you’re looking to go down.

If you love blue, maybe consider painting the shutters blue when it is in your budget. (And paint the door blue as well.) If you keep the window boxes, you might even be able to play with two complimentary shades of blue between them and the door.

And also - if you change nothing, your home is lovely as is!

I hate to suggest white, but it is an option. Black also, although I like to see contrast between the front door and the shutters. Speaking of the shutters, they are too small. I would consider getting some that fit the windows (assuming there is room), or removing (assuming the siding hasn’t faded around them). A brighter, darker yellow would also work. I do think you can find a blue that works for the yellow. Black and white are neutrals, your roof appears fairly neutral as well. The teal door below is Aegean Teal. I also love the first door that Trace posted. I’m really into aubergine doors right now. Finally, I would get a more colonial looking door for your house. That one has more of. A craftsman fiber IMO.

Thank you everyone for the comments. Unfortunately doing anything with what I know realize as small shutters isn't an option. Taking them off would then leave holes, fading and as we recently found out from friends in the area who just resided a similar side house 70k is not going to happen. Painting them isn't something I want to take on either - silly but there's nasty looking spider where I live and that's a nope. Haha Plus I don't want to deal with maintenance on them after painting. 

I feel like the new door is more suited to the house than the basic builders door which is what on it. And I want a short window at the top to let more light in and not replacing with another solid door.

I do like the purple but hubby doesn't. We might just end up with black.

Black can be very elegant. I don't want to lecture about the door style, but I think your home would look better with a different door. Homes can start looking Frankenstined with different styles pasted on. Here is an article with some interesting info.

You could probably also find one like above that doesn't have a transom, but just has a larger door (assume your opening is 8 feet?). It's also a nice look.

I agree with Susie regarding the Craftsman nature of that door, it might not look quite right with your beautiful Colonial. Something to note regarding the door you like - I have that same door and the decorative 'shelf' under the window tends to hold a bit of rainwater on it, and when you open the door the water will end up inside on the floor....

So I guess I should have mentioned that I also want to eventually add a porch (similar to that stone house Susie posted... Ideally but it also may also end up being a A-line type to deal with the snow better). The front of our house only get morning sun, so with adding that porch sun through the front door is ideal. I went back to the door site and did this one up. All the glass is frosted except the top (frosted is needed because it creeps me out people standing there looking in, and I also have kids who's friends come to the door whom I also don't want staring at me. Haha) So would this type of door go better? And I chose black as it looked better in the picture than white but I would go all black and not have white trim, correct?

Also, for the trim around the windows - that's being replaced with simple flat white trim to look like the attached picture. Unfortunately the ornate stuff really wasn't done correctly and is rotting.
