Need help with kitchen island lighting
I am struggling with our kitchen island lighting. I really want something elegant but not blingy. Not sure if we should do one long fixture or 3 separate ones. I like things to be on the unique side but not outrageous. There are so many choices and I am all over the place on this choice. Help!!

Comments (1)Check out Rejuvenation -- we got a really pretty semi-flushmount Mission two light for over our sink (the Bernard). They have many, many different options, and you can customize finish and shades on many of them. I don't think lights in the two different rooms need to be matchy-matchy, although you'll want something Arts&Crafts-inspired for both rooms, and maybe use the same finish. Comments (2)A great lighting designer once told me good lighting is never seen. I am fond of the "Form Follows Function" school of thought. Having said that I think you should at the tasks you will be doing at the island first. Make sure you have the proper lighting for those tasks then worry about the aesthetics. The most important thing is to know your options. Big box stores typically have limited options and low quality. Find a good lighting shop with qualified designers to advise you properly. Last but not least make sure to remain consistent in the color of light throughout each space. 3000K is the color I use the most. Comments (1)@jessicabaskerville, Given the extra ceiling height, your open area plan, and overall island size I suggest using 3 pendants of the size you're currently considering. See attached image for approximate layout. Keep the height so anyone standing at the island can see through to other spaces un-obstructed by the base of the pendants. The island pendants should be on a separate dimmer for better overall control of kitchen lighting. Also, be careful of your bulb choice since bare bulbs will produce some glare (another reason to use a separate dimmer). Comments (2)Yes, where you see the bulb hanging down in the nook is what I'm shopping for. I'm thinking a diameter between 15-20" for a light over the table. The table that will be going there will likely be rectangle measuring somewhere around 34-36"x42" A chair on each end of the table....See More

11 months agoHere are some guidelines for choosing # and size of pendants. Measure the length and width and calculate what would work best. Sometimes odd numbers look best, but sometimes two fits and looks better than 3. If you do a lot of cooking, you may want to choose something with an easily cleanable surface (e.g., not a linen shade).

10 months agoA long, asymmetric linear chandelier would look great. I had trouble finding one that is long enough for your island.
The scale of this render may be misleading. The fixture is only 43” wide.

10 months agoMy issue is with the placement of the out lets, they are too close together IMO I would only use one that falls to center. the island is like a T so I feel like putting 2 or three in only one space might seem odd. this is from Uttermost.

9 months agolast modified: 9 months agoWhat I think would be truly fun and actually elegant is, instead of something hanging down, blocking the open feeling, is small cordless rechargeable table lamps, just for the seating/bar area, like an old fashioned night club. They come in all sorts of styles and colors, but I liked these since you have so much massive black. Don't know if 2 or 3 would be best. These also come in yellow or white or forest green, so you could do a color combo of 2+1 or maybe just two pure yellow ones would be great fun.
