Sometimes you just have to wonder 'why'.
Comments (9)In about 1980 or 1981, Texas had a horrible heat wave. The temps did not go under 100 degrees for something like 27 days. Although we lived in the southwest area of Dallas, & driving was torture, one night after work my roommate wanted to go to Prestonwood Mall, about a 45 minute drive. She was insistent. We hadn't been in that air-conditioned mall 5 minutes before someone called, "Evie!" It was an old classmate from her high school in Clovis, New Mexico! ........ ........ An old friend told me that she sometimes has those spur-of-the-moment changes of, uh, plan? heart? mind?, but hers are usually of the dodge-the-bullet variety. She thinks maybe it's her guardian fairy angel godmother. One day, she said her car "just turned in to Baskin-Robbins", she didn't know why. So she & went in & bought a carton of milk. might as well... Got back in the car, resumed her journey, & saw, less than a minute down the road, a car just like hers smashed into a tractor-trailer rig. The paramedics were cutting away the car to get the driver out. still gives me chills....See MoreYou know you just can't please some folks!
Comments (8)Ok, now I know I've lost it. I'm bidding on high dollar seeds and couldn't even grow one from my own seed pod last year. Last year was the first time I've grown a daylily in my gardens. I have over 500 named tall bearded irises. When I saw how far daylilies have come from the old fashion ones like my mother and grandmother use to grow it was love at first sight. Can any of you relate to that? LOL Anyway, I did get about 15 of those seeds to sprout and grow to about 4 inches, then the fungus gnats got them. Of course at the time I didn't have a clue what was happening to them. That and the fact that I probably didn't plant them in deep enough pots for their roots. I was just thrilled that I did get a few to sprout after reading that they were hard to start from seed. (Which I now believe was not the truth, I just think you need to know how to get them to germinate). Now some of you people that are complaining you don't have enough room. You can send your extra plants, seedlings, or seeds to me and I'll grow them out for you. I have a little over 35 acres to play with. LOL Of course I'd have to have at least a start of each one in return. Any takers..... I didn't think so. I dream real big. Just like everything else in Texas. Comments (94)I have canning directions from a number of universities, Ball, Kerr, Presto, etc., dating back for over 20 years to the present. There have been many changes to the recommendations given by the various sources over the years. Example: pressure canning tomato juice in "Presto Cooker Canner, Directions and Recipes, 1978" lists no requirement for adding lemon juice or other acidification, and a recommended processing time for both pints and quarts is given as 15 lbs - 0 minutes. We've used that recipe over the years with no problems, but have since changed to other processing methods (processing time, acidification, pounds of pressure). It was only until a few years ago that we could find an "approved" method for preparing and canning vegetable tomato juice (V8?), but we've been canning quarts and 1/2 gallon jars of our own "V8", using our own directions which I've published here a number of years ago, for over 30 years! Jeez, did I get the nasty comments after posting that. And, the person that posted that the large canneries monitor the temperatures of each container in a batch, and conduct lab tests on products from each batch has certainly observed canneries other than the 10 or so I've visited. Getting back to recipes for half gallon jar recipes, I know it would be no big deal for a University that routinely conducts food safety testing and publishes "safe" recipes to conduct tests and provide recommendations for canning at least a limited number of recipes they standardize as to type and amount of each ingredient, etc. Heck, I can't believe that a great number of grad students haven't wanted to do just that!...See MoreJust when you want it, you can't find it
Comments (22)My DD had a flannel plaid shirt from Urban Outfitters a few years back that had that same back. I know what you mean about polyester, but this such a nice top that I give it a try. It is the type of top I would wear going out to lunch with friends or even out to dinner. Nothing where you would be exerting yourself. No, I wouldn't wear polyester if I am going to be outside in the heat, or grocery shopping and pushing a cart around....See Moremorz8 - Washington Coast
