Should we ditch 10 ft. ceiling?
Comments (22)I'm sitting in a great room with a 14' ceiling, and it feels wonderful. That same ceiling height in the kitchen feels cold. The difference is that the great room has interior details (beams, ceiling fans, cabinets) that reference to 8' and 9', so the room has some human scale. The kitchen just has a white ceiling and the cabinets reach up to 10'. I always want/need higher ceilings, and interior details which vary in scale. I'd cut costs in the floor plan...6K sf. is a lot of money to heat and cool. You don't even want to know what your housekeeper will charge to clean (try 2-4 people all day) and it's too large to clean yourself. Unless you plan to scuff everywhere in "dusting slippers" your dust bunnies will be big enough to rope and ride. I realize that you probably really need that much space; we run 3 businesses out of our house. You might have 22 grand kids. Think "bunk rooms", shared spaces, flex spaces. We build up, into lofts, and let the agile kiddies climb the ladders. They think it's great fun. They like "dusting slippers" too....See More10ft Ceilings - Run Cabinets All the Way to Ceiling?
Comments (26)I love the look of your kitchen, babs, I think the open space above is a great look. Unless you have money to burn AND a too-large kitchen, I vote for 8 to 8.5 ft of cabinets with cove lighting above. What does cove lighting do? It gives soft indirect light which is always more flattering than high wattage central bulbs. Plus for smaller kitchens it highlights the openness of your ceilings and turns dark, murky shadows above the cabinets into a pleasant accent feature. I love all your stacked/stacked look pics above, guys, especially with the backlit top row. But worth the extra money over cove lighting? Probably not unless you have an unlimited budget or you've REALLY REALLY gotta have it. Then you probably should get it. :) Davif...See MoreWhat ceiling height to use 9ft or 10 ft.
Comments (16)I much prefer 10 foot ceilings as long as everything is proportional. I agree there is more drama with the higher ceiling and kitchen cabinetry that goes all the way up looks great with lighted glass fronts. It really is a matter of personal taste. Some prefer it lower and say it’s more cozy. To me it feels more claustrophobic. Honestly though, my home feels super cozy with our 10 foot ceilings. Lighting, color scheme, and decor are what really contribute to having a warm and inviting space. It’s hard to make this kind of decision for someone else. If, when you’re in homes with the higher ceilings, you really like the look and feel, then that’s what I’d go for. Our first floor is 10 foot and we did 9 feet on the second floor. I could kick myself for that one. We should have done 10 on both floors. There is a VERY noticeable difference when going upstairs moving from 10 feet to 9 feet. Our upstairs landing feels like a hobbit space in comparison. IMO, if one has a two story home, both floors should have the same ceiling heights....just looks and flows much better that way....See MoreWhat size baseboard trim for 10ft ceilings with NO crown molding?
Comments (13)Charles Ross Homes- Thanks so much for the extra info on the need for tempered glass. I was originally going to do a semi circle type arch at the top, which was nearly $4,000 for that window section...so the 3 rectangles will be much cheaper overall. I am still debating if I want to do the full picture window from 7.5 inches from floor to my 96inch header...or do the awning window at the bottom. If I do the picture windows, the door directly to the left will have a retractable screen. We are building in woods, so there won't really be airflow, we just want to hear nature. ILOVERED-good point. My kiddos are older..and we would definitely babyproof for grandbabies...but there are so many other hazards that a locked window at that stage. Thanks to everyone for the calculations...I started with Google..but big difference between 5 and 8 inches!!! CP-Thanks for the photos. I'm thinking 1*8 for baseboard, 1*6 for above doors/windows and maybe 1*4 for the sides of my doors. I don't want anything too fancy. JuneKnow-Interesting. I pulled out all my crown molding and put 1*4 baseboard trim in my 8ft ceiling flip house. I like the nice look of the trim, but the cleaner look on the ceiling. I use to love crown molding...but I'm getting a little simpler in my tastes as I age. Still like nice and expensive...just a lot more things in my house to focus on than some crown molding 10 ft high....See Morecpartist
