Cabinets and 10 ft ceilings
Comments (18)I think it's important that the room (& the windows & doors) be large enough to balance the imposing scale of cabinets to a tall ceiling; otherwise, it might be a bit overwhelming. My kitchen is one end of a great room (approx 1/2 the room) that is 14'x37'. The ceiling is 11' (150 year old house) with pantries on one side going all the way up & the opposite wall has cabinets to approx. 10'; the short connecting wall has a tall window & door that repeat the sense of height but give a visual break; & the opposite end of the kitchen is open to the living area. If the kitchen had been narrower or enclosed instead of opening into another area, I suspect the super tall cabinets would feel top-heavy. Likewise, regular height cabinets would look dwarfed against the rest of my architectural components....See MoreTray ceilings or something else for these 10ft ceilings?
Comments (5)@lbur1999 I designed a low profile tray ceiling for someone a while back, you can take a look [Here[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/custom-designs-and-model-renderings-contemporary-new-york-phvw-vp~28679795) to get an idea it has a few tiers which can be made larger in size especially in your case with a high ceiling. Or something like this This type of ceilings can be designed and done many different ways, there is also already made molding molds which can make a tray ceiling....See MoreMudroom cabinetry with 10 ft ceilings, how to lower the cost
Comments (38)I'm no pro, but from the rendering and layout you provided, it looks like this space was designed to make the cabinets go to the ceiling and completely fill the space as the first priority, and not with the desired end use of the space in mind. I'd back it up, and think through some key things: 1- how many people will be using this space and for what purpose? 2 - how much storage is actually required in this space (and what types - hanging, shoes, bulky items, etc.), 3 - is this area visible from other areas of the home, and is there a preference for closed/open storage? Based on those answers, you can start to design the end result. Right now, the hooks and upper cabinets/cubbies are too high unless this space is intended for the Harlem Globetrotters. The amount of bench space is excessive unless an army of folks will be seated in here simultaneously (which doesn't make too much sense because based on the total width/implied length of the room - there wouldn't be enough space for that anyway). I think you need to consult with someone like Jan to create a custom space based on your specific needs, not creating symmetry and filling the space with a bunch of cabinets. "Mudrooms" are one of those things that are super subjective - my definition/implied use may be far different from yours. The focus should be on utility, not purely aesthetics....See MoreAny recent ikea cabinet with custom fronts in kitchen w/10ft ceilings?
Comments (5)10' of cabinets doesn't meet anyone's low budget. Not even in Ikea. Custom fronts will price you WELL out of the budget territory, so you might as well move to a more versatile line to begin with. Design it better on the front end if you have a budget you need to meet. Smaller, lower ceilings will pay off in multiple ways. If you haven't priced 8' doors or super tall windows yet, you are going to be in for a shock. Cabinets are not the only thing that increase in price as you go big and tall....See MoreRelated Professionals
