Exterior Remodeling Design Dilemma

Design Advice Needed: Exterior Ranch to Mid Century Remodel

We are looking to buy this home but are stuck on figuring out how we’d update the exterior to look more mid century. We plan to do the basics that are needed (updating roof, door, windows, etc.) but are trying to figure out structural ways to make it more dimensional such as a breeze block wall as well as determine coloring. Any and all ideas welcome!

verticle slats at the front door to replace the wrought iron. I'd go all the way to the edge of the front door overhang.

I would either remove the bushes & hedge plants or trim them very low, so you can see the house. is there a window behind either of the shrubs?

Nice front yard... I would create a circle drive and courtyard out front...

Its a very pretty ranch style house. Not all ranch houses are mid century. I would try to keep it true, to what it is, and just make a few improvements.

Is that an Eames? Awesome! And love that Ikea pendant. I'm imagining that the light from it plays in a very interesting way on your lovely ceiling. I'd love to see a night time picture of it turned on. Your home is incredible. You have three eating areas back-to-back in your new plan? Do you really need all of them? In your proposed plan, is that room at the top of the plan a new laundry room? I'm having trouble reconciling some of the photos to where they might be on the floorplan. For example, that last picture in your post above, where is that? Could you give us a floorplan of the entire floor the kitchen is on? It can be hand-drawn. It's best if it's on graph paper, to scale, with dimensions. But even a rough drawing would help at this point and you could put something more detailed together later. I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head but I really need to see a drawing with the rest of the space to see if they might work before I take the time to put them together. Do you really want your kitchen so closed off from the rest of the house? Most MCM homes I've seen with walls of windows are more open concept than you have. My idea, if it works with the rest of the space, would be to open it up more to the dining and the rest of the house, have a lot of pantry space for main storage, and more of an un-kitchen kitchen design in that great room with the wall of windows. I'm no expert I just know a lot of people are doing cement board around me. I am not sure if they glue then screw and caulk to prevent hiding spaces. Best to check with an expert. However. It can all have the same look with a smooth stucco or other surface and scoring. Here is one with a slight two tone chimney. Not to much but enough to diminish the height a bit .

Thanks guys! I enjoy reading updates, so I had to do my own. :) I must have been dead to think this was an ugly stone wall! I absolutely LOVE IT! What a dang fool I was! Ugh! We are loving the look! We have purchased 9 metal frames. We plan on selecting 9 of our favs and making gallery above the little table in the entryway. We ordered our new storm windows this week. We went with sandstone ProVia storms. That color will be like the mortar in between the brick. Come spring we will get a new (black) charcoal roof, paint the gables, gutters and downspouts in sandstone as well.

I like your original idea best - dark gray with blue undertones, wood accents. Someone in our neighbourhood did it and it looks great. In real life it doesn't look as as blue as this picture looks. The yard is edged with a Corten steel that looks wonderful with the wood. These pictures are sort of dark and don't do it justice. The wood and Corten accents are the "orange" that is the complementary colour to the "blue". For your house, a wood garage door and/or front door would look great if your budget allows. For landscaping, continue the MCM theme with lots of grasses and architectural plants such as yucca. I agree that light/medium gray with a red door would look too country which is not the look you are going for.

Does the brick have gray in it? I think you can do a darker roof and take a color cue from that.

I would remove some of theyews and add other flowering bushes and add a row of low growing plants for more texture and color.

I like the iron posts and would not chnage them other than to coordinate the color.

Don't attempt to make the house something it isn't. It is a lovely ranch house...sharing one of my favorites for inspiration.

Gray roof, interesting windows/color, landscaping...gorgeous. If you click on the photo you can get a glimpse of the garage.

This is a beautiful ranch house. Houses are what they are. If you want a midcentury house, find one and buy it.

It already is a MCM ranch style get a MCM front door and garage door and then go to work on the landscaping. This is one of my faves for inspiration on a MCM ranch . Note the front and garage doors too Please do not paint the brick unless you want to instantly devalue the house .
