Mid-Century Modern Exterior Advice Please
We are slowly reclaiming our 1960 MCM home and would love some advice/opinions on the exterior.
1. first floor is cement block in a raised design but the back and sides of the house are mostly glass so theres not much of it-except for the car port
2. second floor is painted cedar that's is really sad shape- needs to be replaced
3. band below the cedar are cement panels with embedded stone- some damaged areas that can possibly be repaired. What do you think of the stone? Keep it?
We like the look of horizontal cedar, industrial looking flat cement panels, anything sleek but are having trouble finding just the right combination. The windows with aluminum frames will be staying.
I love this house and feel like it has so much potential, any help is appreciated!

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoyou're right, it could be very cool. I would bring in some warm cedar siding, keep some of the gray, and bring in some black. look at these photos to get an idea. Landscaping will also play a huge role in bringing in the look you want.

Off-white with a bright colored, mid century door was the direction I was leaning, so it sounds like I’m on the right track, @emmarene9, I think the small plants are boxwoods, but I am going to pull those out along with the stones and redo that bed with some more mid-century appropriate, Texas native landscaping - maybe grasses or succulents. Comments (12)If you like the fence and want to keep one I would look at installing a horizontal wood fence where the existing fence is located. This would enhance the existing horizontal lines of the house. With the lighter tones of the brick I would paint the dark brown colors a lighter tone. Comments (147)@Indecisiveness there will be windows lower in the bedrooms on each wing . We have one side that will open to a courtyard. so this won’t be in any comparison to a basement- that’s for sure. im Sure that was a fun experience! Basement living And a father who did it all himself. That was my life too (minus the basement). My dad would buy and sale quite a lot and we lived in many unfinished homes . He loves those fixer uppers and living in them until they sold. 😂 @Mark Bischak i do understand the garage statement . But having it away from the home gave us more space inside and more light. Would be open to any suggestions for sure. @ourfarmhouse- yes this home has very tall ceilings . Always wanted a two story feel in a one story home. The living room will have metal beams and lined with a light colored wood. The fire place will have a whole wall of rough white brick . @ourfarmhouse at the front of your renderimags- to the left of the orange door. What would this be? Kind of curious. I have already printed them out and wasn’t sure. as for the garage. It just wouldn’t fit pulled into the house now that we’ve added a mud room . so you like that flat roof wirh breeze way. Comments (29)Browns and beiges are devlishly difficult to do well. And even harder for us who are interpreting these colours on our screens. On my screen your roof is not at all orange-brown. I took a shot of it your roof, enlarged it and this is what I see. A pinkish brown that is pretty close to the rosy brown shown below it. The darker colours are a burgundy brown or wine brown. The blue beside it is the complementary colour to pinkish brown - opposite on the colour wheel. On my screen and to my eye, this looks better than an orange door. Even the bit of orange on the pavement at the bottom of your picture seems to clash with the roof. The blue could be lighter or darker or less saturated, but stay in the same general level of blueness vs going more green-blue or more purple-blue. https://www.color-name.com/rosy-brown.color https://www.farrow-ball.com/en-us/colour-by-nature/deep-reddish-brown You could do worse than get a professional colour consultant on this. Whatever you choose, I'd paint some big sample boards and look at it in different lights before you pick up the paint brush....See More

maybe consider doing a stone veneer? to me, the wood siding just makes these homes,,,,dramatic trim and colors and the landscaping. so unique.
