Green blooming hydrangeas
Comments (2)You named it yourself, "Limelight". Also Annabelle is lime green at first then turns white. Lots of Oak Leaf types here too. Earth Touch Garden Center on Whitesburg in Hsv. has all sorts....See MorePale color blooms and green blooms
Comments (1)As hydrangea blooms age, they turn or fade to green (blue/purple in cooler climates). After turning green then they change again, adding bits of pink and/or burgundy. Basically, this is normal for hydrangeas. If you do not like the colors, you can cut off the blooms. Adding lime will not accomplish anything but make the soil more alkaline. Comments (4)Choo, that's just what hydrangea's do as the blossoms age. Squirrely girl, no, just the right amount of sun if she had blooms last for two weeks. That's the great thing about hydreangas. BTW I wish our zones would appear on the other side. That'd sure help in mockup suggestions. Lisa, it depends on your preference. On my ES's I take them off somewhere between green and brown. On my limelight I just leave them be....See MoreHydrangea ID: Blue to Green to Red!!
Comments (2)From the shape and configuration of the sepals, it looks a bit like 'Fuji Waterfall' (syn. 'Fujiotaki'), which Dirr describes as a "loosely configured mophead". He goes on to describe the flower color as white suffused with blue in acid soils or pink in more neutral soils. Coloring of mature flowerheads can be rather variable depending on climate, amount of sunlight and watering conditions, but the greening followed by reddish tones is not uncommon on a lot of different hydrangeas. A photo of the shrub in blossom during the growing season might be more helpful. And there seems to be some confusion in the labeling of plants with this name - often 'Fuji Waterfall' is described as a lacecap with a cluster of fertile flowers surrounded by the cascading sterile ones. Dirr's photo shows only a loose cascading mass of sterile florets but even fully mophead varieties tend to hide a few fertile florets here and there. I'm not at all convinced that there are not at least two plants going by this name, one also referred to as 'Fireworks' ('Hanabi') or sometimes 'Shooting Star'. These names tend to be used interchangeably but there are hydrangea authorities (Dirr and Barry Yinger among them) who are firm that these are distinct plants....See Moregardengal48 (PNW Z8/9)
