Annie, if you get a the continual blooming kind like endless summer, it's basically no maintenance because you don't prune them. Just some fertilizer in the spring and leave them alone. The only downside to hydrangeas is that they aren't evergreen is it's just sticks until Spring.

The key is the right plant in the right place. You should have your soul tested first, and make sure that your space will offer the right amount of sunlight.

I planted my hydrangeas on the south side of house against the fence which only gets a bit of afternoon but they are thriving. Blooms are now faded in autumn (I am in southern hemisphere) but still look chic.
