What about David Austin's rose Janet??
Comments (36)Bought my Janet rose at my Ace Hardware in early October 2010, planted it immediately, kept it watered and mulched. This spring it sent up many spindly canes with buds at the ends. It proceeded to collapse on the ground still sending out canes. This seems to be an extremely weak climber. Floweres are lovely and full but ther are not too many. I will give it a month to strengthen....See Moreabout the David Austin bagged root roses out there now
Comments (28)Since this thread has popped back up I should say that DA did replace the damaged roses and the replacements are awesome. I haven't seen any of the DA body bag type roses at our Whole Foods lately or anywhere else. If I saw some I would probably get some even though I definitely don't need anymore DA roses this year lol. I went ahead and ordered Lady of Shallot from DA because I really wanted that one and hadn't found it elsewhere grafted....See MoreWhat Do You Think About this David Austin Statement?
Comments (7)For almost all of the second half of the 20th century, the assumption was that anyone remotely serious about roses in the eastern half of the country was going to spray fungicides. While it is fading out, there are still a lot of people who automatically make that assumption. Responsible and knowledgable people here always want to know where people are before recommending roses so they can judge the blackspot pressure, and whether or not somebody is willing to spray. A rose can be a wonderful plant with a regular spray program, and a miserable wretch without it. Unfortunately, almost all Austins fall into the second group in your area. If nurseries only sold roses that could thrive without chemicals, practically the whole industry would collapse. Do I think they are trying to stick to roses that can handle the general climate with spraying? Sure. It's not that big a hardship. However, if you are trying to grow roses without spraying, it's not useful information. Now this is assuming they are dealing with Star or somebody else who knows something. The 'official' Austin lists for difficult sites are notoriously strange. The usual assumption is that they are trying to extrapolate from UK conditions to US with the predictable outcome. It has been suggested though, that the real process involves a quantity of Guinness and a dartboard....See MoreWhat do you think about these David Austins?
Comments (19)My Abe Darby is in full sun. It has way more blooms since I moved it into full sun than when it was in the shade. I have been gradually moving all my Austins into full sun. They seem to bloom more. Munstead Wood is a dark red which some say burns in full sun but its been doing great in full sun all summer. The heat makes the blooms more pink and the cooler nights bring out the darker purplish tones but they blooms do not fry either way. I have lived and gardened in 11 states. In general, the more humidity you have the more sun your plants can take. In say, hot, dry desert conditions when I lived in Phoenix, AZ plants could take way less full sun than in LA, or FL....See MoreDiane Brakefield
