David Austin Roses - Own Root vs. Grafted
Comments (13)I think most discussions of "own root" vs. "grafted" may be nearly irrelevant, UNLESS one is speaking of specific varieties and specific rootstocks. Each rose variety is genetically unique, and so the root system it produces will be different from that of any other rose, and its behavior on a specific grafted rootstock may be different from that of any other rose. So it becomes dangerous to generalize too much. In reality, every rose is on a "rootstock," whether there is a graft present or not; in an own-root rose, that rootstock is simply that particular rose's root system, which is genetically unique. Of course it is true that most of Austin's roses are at least somewhat related to each other, but even there, there is enough variability that I think it becomes unreasonable to generalize too much. As for the rootstocks under grafted plants, there is a tendency for extreme vigor (Fortuniana) or moderate vigor (Dr. Huey or Manettii), or low vigor (odorata or canina), etc., and a tolerance of acid soils (multiflora) vs. alkaline (Dr. Huey). But those are tendencies. Each scion variety will behave somewhat differently on each of these stocks, and each scion variety will behave differently from other scions, on a given stock. On top of all of that, then, are soil and climate of a specific garden, both of which will affect behavior of a rose on the roots it is given. So I think it is legitimate to say "in Lakeland Florida, even on our sandy, nematode-infested soils, I prefer Austin's "Graham Thomas" and "Heritage" on 'Dr. Huey' over 'Fortuniana' (since they won't rebloom well) or own-root (since they won't survive long), but I prefer 'Souv. de la Malmaison' and its sports on 'Fortuniana' (a combination that gives excellent vigor, floriferousness, and longevity), but 'Tausendschoen' and 'Crepuscule' are excellent on their own roots," those statements may not be true of other varieties, nor of these same varieties in other gardens, in different climates, and with different soils. The bottom line, then, is Caveat Emptor. Yes, get others' opinions and experiences, but realize they may not match what happens in your garden with your set of varieties....See MoreDavid Austin roses on Fortuiana Root Stock
Comments (23)Hi diane_nj 6b/7a, yes I am aware of all those infringements, I am sure the licencees would not come looking for the amount that Cori Ann would like to do, yes if she wanted to notify the licencee, he would chase/hound her, It would not be cost affective to do so and take court action.. As I mentioned I had spoken to Mr Austin himself and his licencing officer. They frown upon it but it is not worth the effort to chase induviduals. Here in Australia, I have spoken to DA's licenced reseller, which is Treloar Roses, the managing director which is Gary Matuscaka also said the same about it happening here in Austalia....See MoreQuestion about David Austin roses at Lowe's
Comments (11)My wife and I grow a large variery of roses. We have found that in general David Austin roses require more spraying than othe varieties that are better acclimated to Florida. The grafting of plants onto Fortuniana root stock is to make up for the weakness in the root system of some roses. Unfortunately the academic types have used their lack of specific knowledge to proclaim that all roses grown in Florida be on Fortuniana. This is not the case. When growing in Florida many areas lack organic material in the "soil" Have a soil test done through your county co-operative extension so that you can amend the planting area as indicated. We like a deep bed of mulch around our plants We use 4-6" of wood chips or composted horse manure, both will add organic material over time. Some people prefer to grow in pots, this way you control the media that they grow in by using something such as Jungle Growth which is available at some Lowe's and Walmarts. The material is high in organic material and drains well. You might even want to use it when planting in the ground. We went through a number of plants before learning how to grow roses. It also took several years to carch on. You can do it and be successful. You might try some native roses in the future. You might also consider going to the Central Florida Heritage Rose Society meeting held monthly in Lakeland, FL....See MoreDavid Austin Roses at Whole Foods???
Comments (13)That is all really helpful! I’ve heard from a few different nursery owners that it has been absolutely insane how busy they’ve been since COVID! It makes me happy to know that they are getting good business, and more people are paying attention to their gardens, but it makes it challenging for the rest of us haha! Seil, thanks for the advice on snagging any bareroots as soon as they come out and then keeping them moist but dormant until it’s proper time to pot! I wouldn’t have thought of that! :) Diane, alameda, librarian, thanks for the heads up that DA’s are becoming tricky to get your hands on. Another question I’ve been wondering: So normally I’d just order bareroot roses in the spring, especially since I’ve heard that its least stressful for the roses to be shipped bareroot, but due to moving circumstances, I’m hoping to do a fall order of plants from hopefully DA. Has anyone in the Midwest ordered roses during the fall planting season? Did the plants do okay? Or would you just recommend me to wait until Spring 2022 to order bareroots?...See MoreBuford_NE_GA_7A
