Front door color on a house with red brick
Comments (4)I quite like the black door and the porch floor matching the brick. It's classic, simple, elegant and matches the style of the house in my opinion. If you want to add more vivid stuff, I'd go for big pots of tropical annuals like cannas or something and put them a little ways away from the house. I'd keep the pots very understated - simple square pots in a darker color, rather than anything too ornate. Actually if it was my house, I'd probably would keep the plantings at the front of the house fairly subdued and classic and save the showy, colorful stuff for the backyard. But it sounds like you're 'itchin' to go wild....:- )...See MoreWhat color roof for this brick/trim combo?
Comments (15)Thank you for the great suggestions. Feels very reassuring to get other opinions that you think you should do, so it helps further our decision-making process! Polkadots, thanks! This actually isn't our house, just one we saw with this brick that we took a picture of. The brick is CBC Cromwell, with white mortar. We've discovered that brick with any other color mortar, or even white mortar thats too thin...creates a completely different look. We almost decided against it, but then realized that the mortar needs to be white and a tad thicker than normal to create that look....See MorePainting brick house & retaining wall: help w/color & visualizing
Comments (18)I live in the South where painted brick is very common, and I love it. However, I don't think your brick is ugly at all! Maybe it's the effects of the sun fading it, or whatever, but it actually looks quite nice to me. My concern about painting your brick would be the amount of sun you say your house gets, as it would likely cause your paint to fade unevenly. Also, as someone mentioned previously, painting your brick would just create a different huge block of color to look at, and won't necessarily help to reduce the impression of size. If I were you, I would give my shutters and trim a fresh paint job; Charleston Green shutters and door with a warm white trim would go great with that color brick. Replace the brass door knocker and handle with some something less bright (even antiqued brass would look better). I also like the idea of the planter boxes for the upper windows to add a little softness and to visually break up the facade a bit. You will never achieve a cottage look with your home, as its overall design is inherently more formal, but I think these few smaller changes will go a long way towards helping it feel more cozy and warm and reduce the impression of size. Once you have your house spruced up, deal with the problems of the retaining wall separately. I agree that a painted retaining wall would not look good at all. I like the idea of a stacked stone or similar material....See MoreHelp: Must make virtual decision on Florida red-brick home roof color
Comments (27)@cat_ky I have definitely done a 180. We've narrowed it down to charcoal, pewter, summer storm, and heather stone. Since our original roof was also in the grey family, I don't think we can go wrong. The neutrality will give us future flexibility. In addition to changing out the exterior front and garage doors and adding a colorful plant bed, I think we may also consider ways to refresh the front windows so they are gridless and the fascia trim color in the near future. It may not be the light and airy style that I do love; but, hopefully, it will still look updated. If we feel like we're missing something, dare I say changing the brick color is an option. Everyone has been great! My hubby is happy that I've seen the light (lol). Thank you so much!...See MoreKevin Doherty
