Painting brick house & retaining wall: help w/color & visualizing
Comments (18)I live in the South where painted brick is very common, and I love it. However, I don't think your brick is ugly at all! Maybe it's the effects of the sun fading it, or whatever, but it actually looks quite nice to me. My concern about painting your brick would be the amount of sun you say your house gets, as it would likely cause your paint to fade unevenly. Also, as someone mentioned previously, painting your brick would just create a different huge block of color to look at, and won't necessarily help to reduce the impression of size. If I were you, I would give my shutters and trim a fresh paint job; Charleston Green shutters and door with a warm white trim would go great with that color brick. Replace the brass door knocker and handle with some something less bright (even antiqued brass would look better). I also like the idea of the planter boxes for the upper windows to add a little softness and to visually break up the facade a bit. You will never achieve a cottage look with your home, as its overall design is inherently more formal, but I think these few smaller changes will go a long way towards helping it feel more cozy and warm and reduce the impression of size. Once you have your house spruced up, deal with the problems of the retaining wall separately. I agree that a painted retaining wall would not look good at all. I like the idea of a stacked stone or similar material....See Morewhite paint color to go w/slate floor, reddish wood trim, travertine
Comments (16)The living room trim doesn't look random because that trim is throughout the main level except for the master bedroom. The oak is what seems random to me because it's only there in the hallway, though in multiple areas (banister, wood column that's hiding an old chimney, and built-in shelves next to the column. The door stain is kind of random also. The whole has random elements because the previous owners really went to town with "upgrades", but they choose a lot of different finishes, so the main living area has four different wood colors between the door stain, walnut trim, the oak, and hickory cabinets in the kitchen. Maybe I can stain the oak to match the walnut trim at some point. I don't think the entryway shelves will look cluttered because there will be baskets on all of them to hold shoes etc. DH didn't want cupboards, and the kids would probably break doors on them anyway. It's hard to figure out what will eventually go and what won't. There's a whole lot that I'd like to replace/redo, but DH doesn't really want to do any of it, so... I'm leaning toward keeping the beadboard but painting it the wall color. I had a designer come today and she said beadboard would look ok if it was painted the wall color. Also, the dining room, which is visible from the entryway, has a narrow strip type of wainscoting that is reminiscent of beadboard, though stained walnut color, so I don't think it will look too out of place....See Morefront door paint color? red brick colonial
Comments (27)any of the colors mentioned above will work. very similar to yours w/the gabled portico. see how they have it w/a black fascia and bright white elsewhere? can't tell if yours is bright white or creamy white. (and you should redo your house numbers. you can barely see them) tried to photoshop the black here and gave you candy apple red door gave you a vintage looking front door in black, and a diff light. emerald green, light, address placque cobalt yam slate gray what this home needs is landscaping. proper landscaping will take this old colonial to a new level those shrubs are overgrown and hide the windows. not a good look bring them down so that you get this look....See MoreWhat color for red roof w/ brown/"bronze" window trim? Comments (28)@JustMe the Mt. Washington Hotel is about 40 minutes away, so we're not overlooking it. I really like that blue, and if we had a black roof (and black trim windows) that's almost certainly the route we'd go. There are several places around with that color blue, and they can look stunning. It's just not a color combo with the red roof that we'd go for. In your mock-up there's 4 different colors going on, red roof, blue clapboards, brown/bronze windows, and white trim. It feels too busy. Here's what we've mostly settled on. Sherwin-Williams Alabaster white and soffit trim painted to match window trim. (I also photoshopped in a larger window on the right, to reflect what's gone in to replace that weirdly small window that had been there) They're going to paint some panels in that and the other two warm whites I mentioned before, but we're leaning very much toward Alabaster. The configurator makes it look even more cream colored than it seems to appear in real life (2nd picture)....See MoreRelated Professionals
