Healthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/2
Comments (11)Sorry to hear of illness and injuries. DH and I are home today, and it will be very rainy both today and tomorrow, so no outdoor workouts. I tried to book mat Pilates classes at two different Y branches, and they were full probably because many people off work, so I guess I will use the treadmill and do some dumbbells and planks here. I will do step in the morning probably inside again. The Y will be closed on Easter Sunday, but it might be nice enough to go for a walk. Weight is down a little bit so I am happy about that. I could really see a change when I got dressed yesterday. I think I mentioned the Pilates studio is moving to a new space? She's had so much success she needs more space and has hired a second instructor. She will still do private lessons but they will offer group reformer (up to 4 eventually) and also barre which I've always wanted to try. So, I'm pretty excited about that. The new space is actually even closer to my office. I somehow cracked the screen on my Fitbit Sense and it also died, which may be related, but I recently ordered the Sense 2, so I have set that one up. It has basically the same features, and my extra bands still work with it. Food has been good, and we are thinking about what to cook for Easter brunch. MIL will come over, and she suggested salmon. I'm all good with that! I bought some local strawberries which were so incredibly good. Have a good weekend everyone. Hope you are drier than here!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 7/23/2023
Comments (11)@lucillle - Pilates has so many great things going for it. I bet you get stronger quickly. @Sueb20 - walks and cooking at home sound like the healthiest of weeks. have a great time at the beach. @Funkyart - You are a healthy lifestyle star! It's a long process, so of course you will have weeks more challenging than others, but I know you will bounce back. I really hope you will become comfortable with the walking sticks. I think all the benefits - being outside, stability, freedom, exercise - will really be worth it to you. And please don't let one picture upset you. Everyone can look off in candid pictures. That's why most people take about 20 and then use filters:) It's a very brief second in time, 2 dimensional, with possibly distorted angles. It is not how people see you. I listened to yet another really good podcast I'd like to share. This one really hit home for me I guess, because although the guest was an expert, he was also an actual trainer that had worked with mostly women for the last 20 years. And it's something about knowing what works for real people that makes me want to try their ideas. His wasn't anything new - the old building muscle line :) But for some reason the way he said it really hit home with me. He talked about muscle giving you the flexibility to eat more/not be so strict with your food choices. I've heard it a lot, but he pointed out he would physically train his clients for a month or so before they even talked about food. Because the small change in muscle, strength, the way they carried their bodies, all made them believers. He also said if he had a client that would work with him AND a therapist at the same time, the results were phenomenal! The psychology of food, eating, weight, appearances - it's pretty complicated stuff. So I did pretty well this week, prioritizing 15-20 minutes of weights before my walk. Walking is good, but this is going to be my number one priority for awhile. If I still want to walk or play pickleball, etc. in addition to my weights, then fine. But they are getting done every day. Here's the link to the video podcast- Focus on Muscle - of course you can find it on Apple or Spotify if you want to listen. @Feathers11 - your post from last week was right after I listened and I thought to myself - that's exactly what he said would happen! Keep us posted on the gym plan. I'm considering that myself, but for now I have enough weights and equipment at home to keep me going for awhile. I hope everyone has a great week!...See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/7
Comments (17)Funky, as you know I am right behind you on the big 60 and while I have some great celebration plans in place, something about ”60” is getting to me. Yikes. There’s no pretending any more, LOL, 60 just is not young. And 59 has been kinda messy for me — all sorts of new aches and pains including undiagnosed pain in one foot (after two MRIs, two cortisone shots, PT, etc., no one can agree on what the issue is) and a new pain on the opposite side of the same foot (I think I pulled? a tendon doing downward dog…kinda pathetic) — seeing my PCP for that one tomorrow. I also had a breast cancer scare a few months ago (it was nothing) and two friends diagnosed with cancer (both my age) and multiple friends’ parents dying. Just feels like there are reminders everywhere that I am getting OLD! Oh, and my skin? Ugh. There was an incident here with some ice cream the other day. That’s all I’m gonna say about that, but it’s over now and I just had some very yummy berries with plain greek yogurt for lunch. Big salad and chicken for dinner tonight. Exercise is spotty thanks to the foot issues. Until last week I was just carrying on with my usual outdoor walks and Peloton rides, but after this new ouchy thing, I have tried to take a break to see if rest might help. I did a couple workouts with weights last week, though, and DH has been away for a few days so I had dog-walking duty. Barn, I heard about that greek cookbook somewhere else, too. I’m going to check it out....See MoreHealthy Lifestyle Progress - Week of 4/14/2024
Comments (13)Now that tracking has become second nature to me it no longer seems obsessive, just something I do as automatically as I brush my teeth.. Some days I don’t even look at the calorie total, but I get a weekly summary from Lose It! and of course I also track my weight daily. Those metrics— two daily and one weekly— guide me with very little effort. This past weekend we had an Easter make-up for all those who were not home for the actual holiday. Honeybaked ham, cole slaw, potato salad, kale and beans and fennel, strawberry shortcake….it was a delicious Southern food fest! Monday morning when I got my weekly report I saw the macros and the scale kindly codified that information into a number 🙄 I already knew I was in dangerous territory without the report but there is something very compelling about hard data, for me anyway. Today is my 700th day of consecutive tracking. I have not weighed every one of those days (sometimes we’ve been out of town with no scale and sometimes i was in a rush or just forgot) but I’ve weighed more than 90% of those days. IMO maintaining a weight is as or more important for me than losing, and it takes both mindfulness and resolve— and the accountability built into the daily measurement of food and weight— for me to maintain. Yesterday I walked the dogs on a very hilly route again, trying to make sure I am in shape for our next trip. Still doing the elliptical at the gym and have added a few workouts on various nautilus machines for strength and targeted toning (I’m talking to you, arms!)....See MoreFunkyart
