Newly painted cabinets don’t match brand new countertops

Help! we just finished painting our kitchen cabinets alabaster by SW, and the warm undertones are not enough to look good with the offwhite countertops. i did test the paint color before starting, but not enough apparently. im so dissapointed that the color doesnt go well with the counter. my dad doesnt mind it, but it has been driving me crazy. We will not be getting new counters and we dont want to have to reprime and repaint again. looking for advice on hardware and backsplash to help save this kitchen.

My dad and i (mainly me) have been working on redoing our kitchen by ourselves. this is the first time doing this and there have been a lot of lessons learned. We did all of the painting (with a spray gun) ourselves.

Put it all together, and then get all your accessories in place (add an accent color, so it isnt all monotone and blah.) and art work on the walls, etc. Once thats done, reaccess the cabinets. It may be that they will be just fine.

It doesn't look bad in the pictures. Maybe it doesn't look the same in person. For the backsplash, try to find a color present in the floor tiles (not white) that will bridge the two. Looks like greige. Or go in a different direction with a patterned tile or green. Bring home or order online several samples. Once you have the doors back on and some samples you can always update your post with a couple options if you haven't been able to decide.

I just got new appliances last month. I put in an over-the-range SS JennAir Convection/Microwave, Bosch SS Dual Fuel freestanding range, SS Samsung french door frig, and black Kenmore Elite dishwasher. The microwave ss had a blue tint while the range was more white. Because these were right over each other, it drove me crazy! I eventually talked my husband into taking down the microwave. Lowe's graciously took it back and I bought the GE Profile Convection/Microwave and the stainless matches perfectly! I took my range drawer to the store with me to achieve the match. That being said, I don't think the frig ss matches the range/micro but they aren't next to each other so it doesn't bother me a bit. None of the handles match and it looks fine to me (and I like symmetry). The black dishwasher looks great with everything because the range and micro have black on the front.

It's our funky bar that's running us into problems, too. Per dh's measurements, which I will say looked GREAT..we were given an estimate of $750 for the product alone. This was on the low end, cheapest edge. But, with installation it put us around $1400. Dh is very handy and does a lot of DIY stuff. But, with all the angles we have on our counter, and this bar he's very hesitant. If you're off even 1/16 of an inch, you could be screwed if you're doing it yourself. Because you're liable for the measurements. If we have them install, they'll come out and measure and anything that goes wrong, falls on them. But, more for labor then the product, UGH. That kills me. I kind of like the idea of trying the paint thing myself. That'll buy us some time till next yr when we can do the Hi-mac that we like so well. It's around $2200 and not in the budget right now. But, spending $1400 just to get something I really don't like. Because the color of the stuff I have now doesn't match my new paint, seems a waste.

Only my instinct given that he didn't execute the visible finishing in an accepted, and well-known, manner. If the visible isn't up to standards, what's behind the walls? My alarm bells went off but it's too late to check it without tearing it all out. You'll know within the year and that's why a warranty is so important. I'm just a check, check-again person after reading the forums for several years. Also, I'm going through my own reno and, despite written instructions and pictures, there have been some silly errors. I try to have a basic understanding of what should be happening so that I can, hopefully, catch it before we have to tear out the work. Also, hired a GC with positive local standing...just like you did. Mine has taken care of things, which have been minor like the wrong size cans and placement. It's like any medical issue, I'm my own best advocate and it's my duty to ask questions. I have to have an idea of the possibilities to ask the questions. Approach it like that. I see no reason to be confrontational. After some self-education with the TCNA handbook (Tile Council of North America), johnbridge is a great place to become acquainted with basics, just say that you expected silicone at the changes of plane and you're confident that he (or his tile person) will follow industry standards.

I would paint the cabinets white and then do a darker painted island. Since you don’t have a lot of natural light this would brighten up the space

Looks pretty close to my eye. Different materials are never 100% exact match to the human eye.

I think it looks really nice in the pics. Like others have said a backsplash and accessories will make a big difference.

They may not "match' but they coordinate without clashing. That's a win. It will look intentional when you are all finished.

once you have your backsplash in and entourage on your counters and a plant in the corner it will all be a thing of the past. Enjoy it!

While I can see a slight difference in whites, it looks good to me. In fact, I think sometimes having a slightly different tone and texture of white when doing white-on-white design can add some dimension and interest. I think your kitchen will look great once it's finished. Your concern and stress is understandable, but I think it will come together nicely.

I think you nailed it. An exact match will rarely happen and you have managed to find two white that are extremely close and harmonize together. You should be patting yourself on the back both for the color selections and for all your hard DIY work.

Hi Lauren- I like it!

I don't like a kitchen when everything is all the exact same color hue.

There is no depth of color then, and it looks so flat and boring and artificial.

I am not fond of backsplashes with a lot of variation in color.

If you want interest in your backsplash you can lay out the tiles in an interesting pattern, or have the tiles themselves have an interesting shape.

You and your father did a great painting job, congratulations!

What everyone else has told you. Finish the kitchen, get your things put away and those things you will have out - out and in place. Maybe add a bit of color with a dishtowel or two, a utensil holder. It's going to look great finished. Almost everyone has your same panic at this stage, you are in good company. Relax, it's going to be very pretty when done, and you haven't made a mistake.

And I like the slight contrast.....finish up and proceed to finish the kitchen and it will look beautiful.

Honestly, you're being too hard on yourself. It is very nice, and you're just seeing a difference because you haven't finished decorating. What are you doing for the backsplash? Many times that can tie things together. I think I commented the same comment earlier this week on a similar kitchen. Once everything is in there, you won't give it a second thought. My white cabinets don't match my white countertop or white backsplash. The cabinets don't even look like they match in some places (lighting). It's ok. Take a look at some pictures on houzz and see if you notice differences. I think you will be delighted when you finish.
