Will it make me crazy if my stnls finishs and hndles don't match?

Hello all,

I have been spending waaaaay too much time (eight months) researching appliances for our new build, and thought I had made my decision.

Then it occurred to me that my choice for wall/micro oven (Monogram) and FD fridge (Profile) might have different finishes in ss. I called GE and she confirmed they do. Also, that they have different style handles. She seemed to think the handle style difference might be a bigger issue.

While I am kind of on the matchy matchy side, and a bit of a stickler for symmetry, I wouldn't say I have OCD about stuff like this.

I am so tired from reviewing all of this stuff ad nauseum, that I am tempted just to say "so what" and run with it, but I also don't want to wish I had done otherwise once the dust has settled.

I am also considering changing everything to black finish as I thought that might be an option. My cabinets are a light eggshell-colored maple with a pewter glaze, my countertops are mostly black (Volga Blue), and I have dark pewter-colored slate floors, so I think that might be a pretty combination.

Could I please get opinions as well as personal experience with this issue?

I find it doesn't matter a bit to me. Especially not in relation to the function of the appliance. That said, I wouldn't want a white appliance in the mix. But different stainless/handles? No problem.

I suppose a designer doing a magazine spread or something might have a different feeling.

So . . . say "so what" and enjoy. I think stainless of any variety will look better with eggshell cabs than black.

I was considering switching to black because my cooktop is gas on black glass with a stainless border.

None of my appliances are RIGHT next to each other. They are all on opposite walls from one another or in the island (cooktop).

I was fine with the idea of mixing the brands until I called the GE lady and she planted that seed of doubt.

I encourage you to live with it for awhile before you decide on anything. I had the same situation in carpet against my marble when I built 14 years ago but I lived with it until just last year when I tore out the carpet and got laminate. I would hate to see you paint the stained wood on your stairs. I think the balance is striking against the white and once it's painted it is VERY difficult to go back. As suggested, when you replace the carpet, that would be the time to use get a closer match to flooring which I agree would look nicer. Since the floor appears darker, a good sanding on the rail and stairs with medium grit paper would remove the varnish/poly and some stain and you could then darken it to match the flooring. Until then, consider adding some accents that bring out the golden oak color and "justify" that wood color in the foyer. Perhaps a small table or bench or anything that compliments the color of the stairs. Over time, I can assure you that it will become less predominant (as you have found) and your eye will focus more on the total impression. Also, you could provide a more spectacular focal piece in that area that draws the eye in a different direction. JMHO.

Hey Missy (waving~) You guys are very perceptive! The color swatches on the wall are color matches to two different tiles. I wanted to see how dark the tiles would make the kitchen so I took them to Home Depot and did a color match. Of course tile is so much different than paint but the overall darkness is all I was concerned with. The paint by the mixer is the center 4x4 tile and the darker one was Stellar Gloss in "Bellini"...I ruled that one out as too dark based on the paint. Suzyq - I actually cut up some of our floor tile but didn't like the look at all..too dark and much too much texture/coarseness. Great thought though! Annie- I've played with several greys but prefer the brown/grey the most...standard greys just don't look quite right. Kate- family doesn't care for the scale of that tile. wow it would be so easy to install that one though! The price is awesome as well. I'm still looking at it. I wish it were a tad less creamy though. Creams seem to muddy up the granite. Pricklypear....LOVE that green color but have been down that road and failed (bought 60 sq ft of tile and ended up not liking it one bit ...ugh) I agree the white is too stark. Thank you for your comments. I'm loving my kitchen but this final detail is still making me kinda nuts! I know any of the tiles (even the white) would look lovely. I just need to pull a trigger and commit to one. I'm very afraid of making a mistake here b/c I know we won't re-do the b/s anytime soon...if ever again! I think I'm going to call Fireclay and see if they'll send me some samples of a shade lighter than the malt tile... and check on pricing again! Thank you , all!!!!

UPDATE: Thanks to you guys here (and mostly thanks to Joseph Corlett's link regarding Silestone slab sizes), they agreed to do away with one of the seams. They kept insisting that they would not do a stretch of stone more than 110", and when I insisted that my color of Silestone comes in jumbo slabs of 128", they "did some research" and conceded that I was correct, and there is no need for two seams in my 150" stretch of counter. I'm updating here for anyone who may have the same questions and issues that I did. I spent countless hours researching and digging and arguing, so hopefully I can save someone else the hassle. You can check the Silestone website for the slab sizes in your color. There is no need for a seam to "prevent cracks"; Silestone is (allegedly) 4x bendier than granite, and if you wanted to put the whole damn slab down you could. Keep in mind though - if your Silestone DOES crack or chip at some point (and it will...it's notorious for chipping despite the durability claims) - you're on the hook for it. Their "warranty" does not cover cracks or chips. Hundreds of consumers have told their stories about bumping a water glass against the edge and it chips, with no damage to the glass, and Cosentino denies the claims, citing abuse of the counter or something. Same with random cracks, etc. Just be aware - these are issues that you will have to call Joseph Corlett to come fix, out of your own pocket. I love the look of mine so I'm willing to deal with those issues, but buyer beware.

Glad you were able to recreate your space. One thought on that "dead" overhead cabinet: If you drilled a 6" hole in the front of the cabinet below the rod -- halfway between the rod and the bottom of the cabinet -- that could be a great space to store used grocery bags you are saving to recycle as trash bags. I just got new appliances last month. I put in an over-the-range SS JennAir Convection/Microwave, Bosch SS Dual Fuel freestanding range, SS Samsung french door frig, and black Kenmore Elite dishwasher. The microwave ss had a blue tint while the range was more white. Because these were right over each other, it drove me crazy! I eventually talked my husband into taking down the microwave. Lowe's graciously took it back and I bought the GE Profile Convection/Microwave and the stainless matches perfectly! I took my range drawer to the store with me to achieve the match. That being said, I don't think the frig ss matches the range/micro but they aren't next to each other so it doesn't bother me a bit. None of the handles match and it looks fine to me (and I like symmetry). The black dishwasher looks great with everything because the range and micro have black on the front.

My appliances have different stainless finishes and it doesn't bother me a bit. The fridge and ovens boths have straight bar handles, but they don't match. It doesn't bother me either, but my fridge and ovens are on different walls and at a 90 degree angle to each other. If they were on the same wall and seen closer together, then it might make more difference, but generally, I would say not to worry about it.
