Need more information

What rooms open off the hallway? Are the floors pale tile or dark oak planks? Are there mirrored closet doors across the walls? Inquiring minds need to know before giving good advice.

Downstairs the kitchen, dining room and sitting room open off the hallway. Upstairs 3 bedrooms and an office open off it. I've attached photos of the hallway as it was when we bought it. Only the door has been changed (Zinc Yellow)and the chairs were taken by the seller. Also, we intend to keep the existing wallpaper in the stairway.

I need to see the door and if you are keeping the wallpaper IMO that drives the wall color inside not the exterior door color. Is that blue painters tape or what .That carpet and that wallpaper are not good at all together . Maybe wait until you get further along before choosing wall color .

The door is the same colour inside and out. See the attached picture.

I agree that the carpet is not great. It will be changed at some point over the next year or two but there are other things to do first.

The blue in the pictures is the colour of the bannister. It can be changed during painting too.

Its a shame the stained glass is gone! I love that feature. I was going to suggest a cornflower blue color that would have communicated well with both the stained glass and the wallpaper on stairs as well as provided contrast with bright yellow light fixture. Though I suppose a nice cornflower blue still works- contrasts the yellow door and fixture (if its still there) and ties in with the light blue of wallpaper.

You could also pull a deep teal or a medium tone green from the wallpaper- they'd play nicely with existing elements. I would paint the banister the same color you choose for walls- but would leave the paneled stair walls white.

Painting the blue bannister top …black…will neutralize it and tie it in with the carpet upstairs…which looks striking and in good shape… at the same time add some black picture frames and furniture pieces in the foyer/front hall…another practical addition to avoid wear or damage and add warmth to the entry area..a big rug in the entry area will be welcoming and protect the floor finish in the high traffic area…a patterned rug will need less attention/maintenance than a solid color one..

Just noticed in the last pic that you removed the flooring?…what are you planning to replace it with?….It is difficult to choose wall colors independently…unless the space is pretty closed off to the rest of the house…the bright yellow door is out of character with the style of the home and sort of dictates…no color ….or lots of color…. in the room……depending on what you are trying to achieve…

I’d paint the hand railing black and paint the walls a creamy shade of white.

Add a darker rug.

We would have loved to have kept the stained glass too but it was just going to be too expensive to have it fitted into a new heat efficient door. That old door was just letting air through like a sieve. We have kept the stained glass though and will have it incorporated into a feature piece for the living room at some point.

The flooring has not been removed, that's just some cardboard in the picture that is protecting the floor while work is going on. The floor will remain as in the first picture.
