Help with kitchen remodel

To save money,would it look bad if I kept my upper shaker maple cabinets and replaced the lower cabinets with a painted shaker. What color would be appropriate? They are currently a light color. I want to get a quartz countertop/backsplash, and farmhouse sink. Just not sure if it would look right.

Two colors of cabinets is not that uncommon, but people usually like the lighter color on top to keep an airy feel. So it would depend a bit on the color you were hoping to paint the lowers.

This is about the only example I found. (Not shaker, but I don't think that matters.)

Are any of the short walls by fridge and stove arch load bearing or contain ducting or electrical chases? I would be eliminating as many as I could to improve layout possibilities if you plan to replace cabs....that means drywall repair but worth it I think. All those jigs and jags make the room choppy. For example, removing that little wall by the fridge means you could run cabs under the window in an L-shape and eliminate that tiny cubbyhole with window. I am not sure what the purpose of the stove arch was/is but that would be high on my list of things to eliminate. What is in that short wall by the fire extinguisher? What is the space between the fridge and the doorway? If a closet, that would be a candidate for removal too. You will need to decide on how extensive you want to go and that will probably be determined by eliminating or keeping the cabs. If you eliminate them and are on a tight budget, look at Ikea cabs when there is a sale. If you keep the cabs, I would probably forgo spending a lot of money on new countertops so big box stock laminate counters should run $150-250. Using LVT tiles on the floor, painting walls, demoing the brick arch, centering stove on the wall space, removing wood valance, ditching curtains and blinds for Roman shades, and I assume updating lighting but only because I cannot see what is there are all things that could be done within a modest budget. Additionaly, how old is the flooring...old enough to be worried about asbestos?

I may try to do a floor plan although at this stage we're starting to hunt for a designer anyway. I'm one of those who can't make much sense of the flat floor plan; I need the 3D to imagine myself in the space. This is a truly weird set-up--so much empty square footage to work with it's like a church reception hall, as someone said to me once. I can just picture all the casseroles lined up on the counter. The strange angles are so problematic.

jpoptart, you'd need to maintain at least the width of a doorway (30-36") between the corners of the cabinets on near each entry. On the fridge side, using a side-loading pantry would help, since the pantry wouldn't be quite as deep as the fridge w/door. If you notice, the shallow pantry is not the whole width of the wall, to leave space to pass. Nine feet between appliances is the maximum distance recommended by the NKBA, which is not as far as it appears on the plan (not to scale). Almost too far to be efficient, but not enough space for an island. Even if there was space for an island, it would be a barrier between the fridge and sink. :( Here's the plan on a grid, although I'm not sure of the measurements in the red oval (laundry/entry area). I used the extra-deep counters on two walls, with cabs pulled out 6", but if it's in the budget you could have deep base cabinets for extra storage. Super susans were drawn in each corner, but the top right corner could be voided, with a wider drawer next to the range, and a wider trash/recycle cabinet next to the sink--with fillers in the corner (blue lines). The uppers on the left and right walls are also deeper (15"), which are offered by some cabinet lines--or standard uppers could be offset 3" from the wall, with side cover panels for the cabinets beside the window on the right. Range placement is contingent on post being removed. The small cabinet beside the shallow pantry is optional for canned goods and small boxes, and shouldn't encroach on the entry. If you have light switches there, maybe they could be moved to the hallway side. Each square is 6": If the W/D area is wrong, the W/D could move up into the pantry space.

Not sure yet. Ideally I’d like to keep some “morning room” rather than make it all kitchen. Just wanting to steal the wall space to the right of the window for the fridge because we’re not fond of the current placement of the fridge. It’s right by the entrance from our garage and mud room and it sticks out so it kind of blocks that area. So thought by moving it to the back/main wall it would be more out of the way. Right now the morning room is just dog crate space and leads to our back deck. We’ve thought about moving the kitchen table/chairs over to the corner if we do the remodel. It’s more casual seating since we do have a dining room on the other side of the pantry. Or maybe a cute coffee sitting area. Former owners had some decor and seating there (MLS photo).

new counters/splash/ all new painted lowers... savings? what savings? The drawer base cabinets in painted are the bulk of the cost ......wall cabs are not the heavier share of the cost in renovations.....I'd go back to the spreadsheet and price full replacement .......what cabinets would you pick if all new uppers and lowers....then go to plan B ...paint the existing uppers and get all new lowers [drawers].....in a species w stain [not paint] of your choice [as in Memphis' 2nd pic above] ....I think if you are seeking even small savings that's the better direction. of course get any lighting upgrades so you can pick the correct tones of everything. Another way to phrase the question back to you...... what cost are you incurring to require painted drawer lower cabs to work w older maple wall cabs that you think should be retained ? If you look at your space and get inspired ...what would you pick for a style/finish /configuration if all new cabinets . Bear in mind with efficient storage choices , sometimes the cabinet runs can be configured differently leading to fewer cabinets overall than what you may have now. You can do a dark gunmetal paint or Hale navy paint for the lowers with older light maple wall cabs which I think may be a bit yellowed , if final choice is to keep them anyway.
