Aw. I am so sorry. I remember you mentioning her over the years, and I always admired how well you handled it all. Being your parent's caretaker is a very hard thing, and your words often inspired me to try harder when I was in the last few years before my dad passed away.

You did right by her. 💜

It is never easy no matter how old they are.I was fortunate too that my Mom lived a long life and today we celebrated my MIL turning 101!

II’m so sorry. You mom sounds amazing! 105 is amazing! My condolences and empathy. My Mom would have been 92 today. We lost her four years ago, but somehow this birthday is the hardest. That might be because we lost the last family member of her generation (and her best friend) last month. it’s so strange to feel motherless.

I am so sorry and wish you peace and comfort in the days and months to come. She had such a long life and I am sure she's held close in your memories and of those who knew and loved her!

I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet mom. I was struck by your words ”but all my life she was the only one I could count on to be there for me." I was trying to explain to one of my friends, whose mother is still alive, how losing my mom 3 years ago has affected me and I used similar words. My entire life, she always was my biggest cheerleader, no matter what. I could do no wrong in her eyes. So sorry about your mother. 105 is quite an achievement. Mine died at almost 93 before Christmas and was the last of her generation as I'm sure your mother was.

We didn't write down the story behind enough items but it is a little freeing to know I can make up whatever story about who they belonged to and no one will know the difference!

My mom died last fall, and I am still adjusting to the loss of her. She was the last of DH's and my four parents. It's been a bag of mixed emotions for me-I miss her terribly, but I also feel a sense of relief that the burden of caregiving is over. I hope I don't sound cold saying that, but caregiving is very hard and exhausting. Take care of yourself.

I remember being amazed at your mother’s long life—mine was 2 years younger than yours and died at 97. I feel so lucky to have had her here for so long. Yeah, I will never really get over her departure abd think of her daily. You have many nice memories, ded. I love the picture!!

Thank you all once again. I know many of you are missing your moms. i was thinking how this upcoming Mothers Day will be my first without a mother. When i was cleaning out her dresser drawers I found every single card my brother, sister and i had ever sent her. Some went back to school days. Very touching.

So many in the Greatest Generation lived long lives. I guess the Great Depression and World Wars made them tough.

My mom lived through the Great Depression, many wars and two pandemics. She remembered seeing FDR when she worked in Washington DC. I am glad she told me so many stories about her life.For those of you who have parents still living, be sure to ask them to tell you their stories. Some day the opportunity will be gone.

Ded, I was positive I had posted on this thread but don't see it. You were a kind and loving daughter to your Mom. Having been on the same journey, I know how hard the last few years can be. I lost my Mom 21 years ago but Dad just died last year at 94. His declining years when we made the tough decision to put him in long term care coincided with Covid which made it all so much worse due to restricted visiting, lockdown, etc. Your Mom must have been so happy to be able to stay in her home. Youn are so right about asking for stories. Even when Dad's short term memory was shot, he could tell me things about his youth in the 20's, 30's and 40's. He always reminisced about growing up tough in "Hastings East" in Vancouver.

Ded, what a treasure to find all those cards! I found a card my mom sent me and it was such a treasure to hear her voice and read her handwriting -- and feel all the love. I sobbed. And that was just one card. And I agree with you about stories. I think the thing I miss most is not being able to hear the stories or ask a question about them any more.

Yes, have them tell you stories. I wish I had more from my paternal grandfather. Second youngest of 13. Grew up on a farm. Fought in WWi. I have his postcards he mailed to his mother and sister from Germany. Mom was good about using her camcorder, and an uncle did cassettes and gave the siblings copies. I need to have those transferred. After my parents died, I found a letter he wrote Mom professing his love for her. He wrote her many letters over the years when traveling, but that was the only one I kept. Keeping the others felt like an invasion of privacy.

@lascatx after my paternal grandmother passed away, I received a birthday card from her. My aunt had found it when going through her thngs and randomly sent to me months later. I immediately recognized her handwriting, and thought what the.... Cried like a baby. DH came home during this and thought something was wrong.

@dedtired My mom passed away six years ago. Mother's Day is not the same.

Just in case no one has warned you, stay away from social media on Mother's Day. Maybe electronics in general. My dad had passed just days before and my mom 5 months earlier. I checked into Facebook that morning without thinking and wound up sobbing. The only thing that saved me was my youngest in crisis over a project due the next day and a book report he had forgotten also due the next day. He hadn't read the book. He had been supporting me and my dad -- my mom before, and it was the end of his senior year. He did his project, read the Spark notes for the book could talk about his book report to make sure what he got from the Spark notes held up. He wrote the book report, but we give each other credit for the save. My most memorable mother's day -- but not one I'd want to repeat.

So sorry for your loss. Losing our mother's is very hard, even when it truly is their time.

Michele, my sister died 4 years ago on March 29th. I sure do miss that gal.

I have kept some cards over the years but when cleaning out my mother's house I found every card sent to my parent's when I was born, every letter I wrote home from college and so much more. Makes me feel inadequate but I can't imagine saving all of those things.
