Comments (16)I had poor luck with BDdC whenever it was wet - ugly soiled tissue look, and with those thorns, hard work deadheading. But great luck with Hansa, Polareis, and Therese Bugnet. I lost Topaz Jewel because it was in a bad spot by top of hilly driveway, too vulnerable to winter salt. TB was the very first rose I ever bought, from Wayside Gardens back in late 80's. It survived rose cane borers, being shunted to a neglected garden, and generally being ignored until a few years ago. I found that it had rooted itself AND sent out a daughter (it had been a graft, but being so ignored, the natural accretion of dead weeds etc must have given it the opportunity). Anyway, I gave away the daughter about 15 years ago to a friend who has to prune it to keep it from eating her whole garden. The original was joined by a second daughter a few years later. Four years ago I moved them both, pruned hard, to the center piece of the new rose garden I put in on south side of house. It is impossible to tell which was which at this point, and I regularly pot up new ones that shoot up every year, for the church and library plant sales on Mother's Day weekend. TB is absolutely clean, all the time. Usually the first to bloom, long huge first flush can go on for over three weeks. Another flush, smaller, mid summer, but never without a few blossoms here and there. And fragrant. Can you tell I love TB?...See MoreFeeding Blanc Double de Coubert
Comments (5)Thank you for your advice. I was mainly wondering if Osmocote should NOT be used ever with BDdC. Not sure why I thought I remembered someone raising an objection some time in the past. Evidently it is no problem. rjlinva, usually when I say "feed my roses," I am referring to RoseTone, compost, alfalfa, and mulch. So I agree with you there. However, as I get older, I sometimes forget or just don't feel physically up to all that. My compromise, after the spring feed, is to use continuous feed like Osmocote once for the summer months to save me time and effort and a sore back. But sometimes I forget to do that too. Oh, those senior moments! LOL Kate...See MoreThank you for recommending Blanc Double de Coubert
Comments (7)BDdC is a very slow grower in my garden. So slow that I almost got rid of her a couple years ago. I'm glad I didn't. She 4 years old now and about 3-4 ft high and wide here in Kansas zone 6. Hopefully in another year she will be approaching 5x5--which is what I was after in the beginning. My only reservation about her now is that her flowers do not last long, and deadheading her can be a chore. Otherwise, she is a terrific rose bush. And I just love the distinctive shape of her leaves. Kate...See MoreBlanc Double de Coubert - I like it!
Comments (2)Wow--your post sounds like I wrote it. I just decided this week that Blanc Double de Coubert may have a future in my garden--after 3.5 years, she is beginning to bloom decently and really fill out. I'm actually beginning to like her. She seems to like more water than some of my other roses, I discovered, and responds really well to Plant-Tone. And guess what I did 2 weeks ago--spaded my 10 year old Gerty. I was tired of waiting for her to look like some of the pics I see posted here. She never even got close! Small world, huh? Kate...See Moredianela7analabama
