Thank you for recommending Blanc Double de Coubert

She's blooming now, and is amazingly white, perfect, and smells heavenly. I did have a couple of buds that turned brown and never opened. Since we've had a cold and rainy month up 'til recently, I'm assuming it's this "balling" I've heard about.

I adore my BDdC. Yup...sounds like you have a couple of buds that balled. Mine is still quite small after 3 years; about 2' x 2'. She is getting bigger everyday!

Thank you for your advice. I was mainly wondering if Osmocote should NOT be used ever with BDdC. Not sure why I thought I remembered someone raising an objection some time in the past. Evidently it is no problem. rjlinva, usually when I say "feed my roses," I am referring to RoseTone, compost, alfalfa, and mulch. So I agree with you there. However, as I get older, I sometimes forget or just don't feel physically up to all that. My compromise, after the spring feed, is to use continuous feed like Osmocote once for the summer months to save me time and effort and a sore back. But sometimes I forget to do that too. Michelle, I haven't tried digging up a sucker (I've only had suckering roses for two years, now). Theoretically, you should be able to dig it up, but perhaps someone with experience will answer. The new plant is sprouting off an underground stem. I suppose that until the root system of the new plant has developed a little, the plant might suffer when transplanted. (I don't know when the root system develops -- before, after, simultaneously with the above ground part?) Unless it's really close to the mother plant, the mother plant wouldn't be harmed. Use a sharp spade. Hopefully someone will tell us it's easy! I don't fertilize much -- a small amount of 10-10-10 in the spring, for all my roses and wildflowers. Sometimes again in late summer for a fall flush, unless we have drought, which we often do. I don't have a long experience with rugosas yet to know if I should be doing something else. Mike

Rebloom on Blanc de Vibert?

We have a hedge of it at my place, and it does rebloom here. I had one plant of it when I lived in Fresno, and it did rebloom there also, though it turned out not to be one of my favorite rugosas. My favorite in Fresno ended up being Topaz Jewel, which was a real performer there, and quite beautiful and fragrant. No surprise there since I think Ralph Moore created it. R. rugosa alba is a much prettier rose in my opinion, and the flowers don't end up so often looking like used tissue paper. That was my problem with BDdC in Fresno, for some reason here it doesn't have that same tendency. --Ron

My Blanc Double de Coubert (3 yrs old) is about 3.5 ft tall and 4 ft wide--not as big as I hoped, but maybe it is just a slow grower. I wanted it to get 4-5 ft tall. It certainly didn't do much of anything its first two years, but it is a satisfactory rose now. However, I wish it were more floriferous, but maybe the problem is that it gets a bit of shade in the afternoons. Don't know if it would bloom more with more sun or not. If I give it an extra watering occasionally, it seems to bloom better. Love the foliage on it, and it gets no disease of any kind. Kate (Zone 6 midwest)

BDdC is a very slow grower in my garden. So slow that I almost got rid of her a couple years ago. I'm glad I didn't. She 4 years old now and about 3-4 ft high and wide here in Kansas zone 6. Hopefully in another year she will be approaching 5x5--which is what I was after in the beginning.

My only reservation about her now is that her flowers do not last long, and deadheading her can be a chore. Otherwise, she is a terrific rose bush. And I just love the distinctive shape of her leaves.

rugosas are wonderful and carefree, glad you to hear you like one of them!
If you have space, try also snowdwarf, and henry hudson, and rugosa alba if you like the white ones.

For dublinbay: the speed of growth often depends from the amount of light they get, and from the quality of the terrain. At least, that's my experience. Nonetheless, some rugosas are "shy" at the beginning, but when they start, nothing can stop them.

RHS spells it 'Blanche'.

I've only known it as blanc, this sounds like a case for the linguist. For myself, I'll take a Henry Hudson: more blooms, pretty blooms better repeat and lots of hips, and just as hardy. I own both.

'Fru Dagmar Hastrup' has also been long and widely mis-spelled. Don't remember the details of the argument for spelling it 'Blanche', but I think it's just something like how white is spelled in French - the rest of the words being in the name being French. 'Blanc' is the wrong language or the wrong context.

Similarly, 'Frau Dagmar Hartopp' is from the wrong language (German) and in addition is not what the Danish originator called the plant.
