Blanc Double de Coubert - I like it!

I've finally decided that I like (not love) Blanc Double de Coubert. This year, probably its fifth year, it hasn't stopped blooming. The flowers are pure white and last awhile. I'm even getting some fragrance for the first time. I'm not saying I would plant it again if I could do it over, but it's won its garden spot.

On the other hand, I've just spaded Gertrude Jekyll - just couldn't stand her and her wild canes with one bloom on top any longer. I've had her for 5 years, and I just can't bear her anymore. She's the FIRST rose I've ever shovel pruned - and I'm quite glad I did it!!

Wow--your post sounds like I wrote it. I just decided this week that Blanc Double de Coubert may have a future in my garden--after 3.5 years, she is beginning to bloom decently and really fill out. I'm actually beginning to like her. She seems to like more water than some of my other roses, I discovered, and responds really well to Plant-Tone.

And guess what I did 2 weeks ago--spaded my 10 year old Gerty. I was tired of waiting for her to look like some of the pics I see posted here. She never even got close!

Yeah, small world - same two roses annoying two different rosers! I felt really good getting rid of Gertie. But boy did she have a big root ball!! About BDdC - I'm feeling the same way "I'm actually beginning to like her." Not actually ringing endorsement, but grudging respect.

My Blanc Double de Coubert (3 yrs old) is about 3.5 ft tall and 4 ft wide--not as big as I hoped, but maybe it is just a slow grower. I wanted it to get 4-5 ft tall. It certainly didn't do much of anything its first two years, but it is a satisfactory rose now. However, I wish it were more floriferous, but maybe the problem is that it gets a bit of shade in the afternoons. Don't know if it would bloom more with more sun or not. If I give it an extra watering occasionally, it seems to bloom better. Love the foliage on it, and it gets no disease of any kind. Kate (Zone 6 midwest)

I have absolutely nothing to contribute to this discussion other than the fact that the only roses I have ever purchased have been rugosas - one pink, one fuscia - and I simply love the fragrance. I ignore them until they begin to block the path to the field when I cut them back and they continue to do wonderfully well. Again - oh, the fragrance! There was an interesting article by Ken Druse in the NY Times last Thursday on flowers and fragrance and how fragrance had been bred out of flowers but is coming back. I find that I grow only flowers that have fragrance, which I'll take over form, color, fashion, whatever any day.

the only rose i have growing is the climbing ramblin' red. there is an offshoot coming up about 2ft from original plant i would be willing to trade. do have a double fern leaf peony i could part with. it is a young one from division i did 2yrs ago. has two or three buds this year. if you would take postage, would be no problem. have a sumac growing from seed (if you have room for a spreading tree!). about 8" high now. iris: golden yellow, light purple, deep purple (almost black) cosmic orange cosmos seeds beebalm (gardenview scarlet)
