fireplace re-cladding - min concrete pour thickness or alternatives

rossn
last year

Re-cladding the below fireplace, which has very textured/featured/rock-style brick, and may go concrete (or like) on part of it.

Is a thin pour of concrete a practical option? If so, what's the minimum pour thickness and type of concrete required?

What specific concrete-alternative materials (panels, trowel-on, etc) would you recommend for reasonable cost and quality/durability? There are so many out there.

We have to be relatively thin and non-combustible on the face with the fireplace opening, and are considering mixing with wood and steel in parts. Happy to have any/all ideas for a modern aesthetic. Fireplace faces living room... opposite side is dining.
